freshman freak or comeback of the year[[ch51]] LAST CHAPTER!!!!!

freshman freak or comeback of the year

[[ch51]]

PETE’S POV

I SIGHED AS I LOOKED INTO VEE’S EYES. “GOD, YOU’RE GORGEOUS.”

   SHE BLUSHED AND LOOKED DOWN.

“IT’S TRUE, YOU DO.” I SMILED AND HELD HER AGAINST ME TIGHTLY. “IF ONLY YOU—“

SUDDENLY SOMEONE PULLED ME AWAY FROM VEE AND TURNED ME AROUND. IT WAS RYAN, AND HE LOOKED FURIOUS. MY MOUTH WAS AGAPE. WTF WAS HE DOING?!

HE LOOKED BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN ME AND VEE. HE RAISED HIS FIST AND THREW IT AT ME.

I WAS SO STARTLED, I COULDN’T MOVE. HE PUNCHED ME AND I STUMBLED BACKWARDS.

“WHAT THE HELL?!” I CRIED AND PUNCHED HIM BACK, TACKLING HIM TO THE GROUND.

I HEARD LOTS OF PEOPLE GASP AND THE MUSIC ABRUPTLY STOPPED. I GOT ON TOP OF HIM AND PUNCHED HIM AGAIN.

“FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!” I HEARD SOMEONE YELL, AND SOON EVERYBODY WAS CHANTING THAT.

RYAN’S POV

I Pulled Pete Back By His Collar. I Turned Him Around And Punched Him Right In The Face.

   “Pete!” Vee Screamed.

“What The Hell?!” The Idiot Said, Getting Back On His Feet. He Punched Me And Threw Me On The Floor.

I Heard Him Yelp In Pain. At The Diversion, I Kicked Him Off Me And Jumped Up.

“Ryan! What The Hell Are You Doing?” I Heard Vee Say.

I Turned Around To Look At Her.  She Was Mad And Worried.

I Ran Towards Pete And Kicked Him In The Stomach As Hard As I Could. It Only Took Him A Moment To Recover And Pete Tried To Kick Me, Too, But I Ducked.

“STOP!” I Heard Frankie Yell, But I Ignored Him.

VEE’S POV

“STOP!” Frankie yelled from behind me.

Pete and Ryan were breaking out a fight at the dance. They were kicking and punching each other like crazy, and Ryan was laughing like a maniac as he twisted Pete’s arm.

Ryan had on a blue vest with a beige, button-up dress shirt with brown pinstripes and black jeans. Ryan’s clothes were all splattered with blood, either his or Pete’s.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Ryan was acting like a totes different person.

Stop it!” Frankie ran towards Ryan and pulled him away from Pete.

I was starting to walk up to where they were, but Summer held me back. “Don’t go, Vee!” she urged. “It’s dangerous!”

“I gotta go, Summer! Before they kill themselves!” I escaped her grasp and ran towards Pete. He was about to charge towards freakin’ Ryan, but I pulled him back towards me.
"WTF are you doing?!" I asked. Both of them looked at me, panting. "Why'd you do that, Ryan?"

The crowd finally dispersed as the fighting stopped.

Ryan looked down momentarily. He finally looked up, his eyes sad and innocent. The soft sweet Ryro I knew came back.

"It just made me so angry to see you with him, Vee. I got jealous because...." he hesitated. "Because I still love you, and I want us to try again."

His pleading eyes searched mine, taking my hand. I could tell he was sincere.

I could feel myself caving in, but I pulled my hand away. I saw Pete and I remembered what Ryan did. I was at a loss for words.

   "I-I'm sorry, Ryan. I...can't."

He looked at me in disbelief, his lower lip trembling dangerously.

"Because...because I have to be with someone that believes me, and you didn't Ryan. It's not my fault you fucked up your chance. I'm sorry, but I can't be with someone like you."

Ryan's face fell and Frankie let him go. I looked away guiltily.

"C'mon, Pete." I helped him get up. Andy and the group started walking towards us, but I signaled that Pete wanted to be alone right now. Andy nodded.

Pete and I walked outside into the dark night and sat on the concrete steps leading up to the gym. Summer quickly came our and handed us a first aid kit, then dashed back in. I began to cure Pete's wounds.

I big my lip, regretful for what Ryan'd done.

"Sorry I dragged you into this, Pete," I apologized.

   "It's not your fault."

I sighed. "But I feel like it is..."

"Uh!" Pete grunted as I ran a cotton ball full of rubbing alcohol over a cut on his cheek.

   "It stings, huh?" Pete nodded.

"I keep having to save your ass, Wentz." I laughed.

   "Yeah." He smiled. "Thanks."

"I can't believe Ryan did this to you," i said as I looked at a big cut on Pete's bottom lip. It still bled slightly. I ran my finger over it, reaching into the kit for some more alcohol.

Pete took a hold of my arm.

"I--" he hesitated. "I have to tell you something, Vee." He looked down.

   "What is it?" I asked.

PETE'S POV

"WHAT IS IT?" VEE'S SWEET VOICE COMFORTED ME. I LOOKED UP AT HER AND INTO HER EYES. I SIGHED DEEPLY AND HELD HER HAND IN MINE. IT WAS TIME FOR HER TO KNOW WHAT I REALLY FELT FOR HER. AND MAYBE GIVE HER THE PROMISE RING I'D BOUGHT. IT WAS NOW OR NEVER.

"VEE, I'VE BEEN KEEPING SOMETHING FROM YOU BEACUSE I WASN'T REALLY SURE, BUT NOW I'M DEFINITELY SURE. I-I LOVE YOU." HER EYES SHOWED PUZZLEMENT AS THE WORDS LEFT MY MOUTH. "I KNOW IT MIGHT BE HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT IT'S TRUE. SOMETHING INSIDE OF ME TELLS ME THAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE MINE, THAT YOU'RE THE ONE FOR ME, THAT THERE ISN'T ANYONE ELSE WHO CAN EVER OWN MY HEART. IT'S YOURS, VEE. AND ONLY YOURS."

   "PETE--" SHE STARTED.

"I KNOW YOU WEREN'T EXPECTING IT, AND THAT YOU PROBS. WON'T WANNA BE WITH ME." I LOOKED DOWN.

"NO, NO, PETE. I LOVE YOU, TOO."

I LOOKED UP AT HER AND BIT MY LIP.

" I'VE KNOWN YOU ALL MY LIFE AND I'VE BEEN TOO BLINDED BY OTHER THINGS THAT I THOUGHT I LOVED, LIKE RYAN. BUT NOW I KNOW THAT YOU'RE THE ONLY THING IN THIS WORLD THAT CAN MAKE ME HAPPY. THAT I LOVE YOU."

I GRABBED HER AND KISSED HER PASSIONATELY FOR REAL LONG. THEN VEE DID SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED ME. SHE TONGUE-KISSED ME I FRENCH-KISSED HER, TOO. I HELD HER TIGHTLY. SHE SMILED.

"I HADN'T TOLD YOU BEFORE BECAUSE I THOUGHT YOU'D HATE ME OR SOMETHING," I SAID AS WE HELD HANDS AND WALKED INTO THE GYM.

"NO, PETEY, I WOULDN'T." WE SAT AT THE BLEACHERS AND SHE LAY HER HEAD ON MY SHOULDER. I COULDN'T HELP BUT SMILE.

"WHY ARE YOU SMILING?' SHE ASKED.

"I JUST THOUGHT EVERYTHING WOULD FALL APART." SHE KISSED MY CHEEK. "BUT EVERYTHING TURNED OUT RIGHT. LET'S DANCE."

WE DANCED TO GOOD CHARLOTTE "CHANGE".

VEE'S POV

Pete and I got to our feet and started dancing.

"I thought you couldn't dance," Pete said.

   "I can't."

"Maybe you're just so happy you don't notice that you can." Pete smiled.

We only got to dance a few songs before Christi Legassi interrupted our moment.

"Will you dance with me, Peter?" she asked.

"Um..., I'm kind of busy right now," he told her.

"Ya, leave us alone," I agreed. She gave me a dirty look and tugged at Pete's arm.

   "C'mon, Pete."

   "Christi, stop."

   "Please?"

   Pete turned to face her.

"No, no you fucking creep!" Pete screamed. "I have a girlfriend and I love her, Vee, not you! Stop stalking me, bitch!" Her eyes widened and I heard gasps all around us. I laughed. That was the greatest comeback of the year.

"But...," Christi looked around and saw a bunch of people staring at her. "I--I never liked you anyway! You're so ugly and stupid and, and...fuck you jerks!" Christi yelled as she ran off and burst into tears. We laughed.

"Wow, what a lame comeback," Summer said.

   "Ya," Andy said.

"She's stupid and ugly," Bob laughed, mocking her. We all agreed.

   "Vee?" Pete said.

   "Ya?"

"I need to ask you somethin' in front of all our friends. W--will you be my GF?" Pete looked into my eyes hopefully.

Summer squealed and the guys gasped.

   "Of course, Petey," I smiled.

"Aww!" Summer smiled and jumped up and down. "You guys make such a cute couple!"

   "Congrats!" Andy said.

"Wow, this is a weird night!" Bob said.

Pete took out something from his pocket. I gasped. It was a ring! He placed it on my finger.

"This is a promise ring," Pete said. "I promise I'll always be with you."

   Summer awwed.

As I went ahead and gave Pete another kiss, I knew that this was the end of a weird chapter of my life and the beginning of another, better part.

"I love you," Pete whispered in my ear.

   "I love you, too."

The End

freshman freak or comeback of the year

[[ch50]]

RYAN’S POV

After School, My Band Practiced In Boyd’s Garage. None Of Us Were Really In A Hurry To Get Ready For The Dance, Because We Didn’t Have Any Dates. None Of Us, That Is, Except Boyd And Frank.

We Practiced For About Three And A Half Hours.

“Phew! I’m Done For Today!” Boyd Said. “I’ve Gots To Get Ready For The Dance. I’m Gonna Go With Ana Maria,” He Smiled. “I Bet You’re All Jealous.” He Walked Into His House.

“Well, I’ve Gotta Go Too, Guys,” Frank Informed Us As He Put Down His Guitar. “I’ve Gotta Get Ready. Bye!”

He Ran Off. Chuck And I Frowned.

   “This Sucks!” Chuck Muttered.

“Ya, I Wish I Had A Date, Too!” I Agreed.

“What Are We S’pose To Do Tonight If All Our Friends And Everyone Else In High School’s Is Going To The Dance?” Asked Chuck.

   “I Dunno, But I Doubt Everyone’s Got A Date.”

   Chuck Snorted. “Ya, Right.”

“Do Ya Know Johnny Kremen? That Kid Who Adores Classical Music, Has A Date?” I Challenged.

   “Unbelievable, But Ya, He Does!”

   I Laughed. “No Way! Who?”

“Uh, That Girl!  Chelsea Iach, Who Always Plays The Leading Lady In School Plays.”

   “Whoa!”

   “Yep! I Know!”

“How Can He Get A Date And We Cant?”

   Chuck Shrugged.

“Ya Know What? Let’s Go To The Dance Alone! Who Cares? We’ll Steal Other Guys’ Dates!”

“Ya! I’ll Try To Get Kremen’s!” Chuck Raised His Eyebrows And Smiled. I Laughed.

   “Do Ya Got A Suit?”

   “Yep.”

   “Me, Too.”

“So, Let’s Get Ready And Go!”

   I Smiled.

“See Ya At The Dance, Chuck!” I Waved And Left For My House.

Maybe Vee’ll Be At The Dance Without A Date, And I’ll See Her. Then Maybe I’d Go And Apologize And She’ll Forgive Me, I Thought. Then We’d Dance Together And Love Each Other. Everything Would Go Back To Normal And We’d Be A Couple. Maybe, I Thought. Maybe…

I Hoped It Would Be So, Because I Loved Her Too Much To Let Her Go.

Andy’s POV

Pete, Bob, and I were driving to Summer’s house in Bob’s Dad’s car.

“Bob!” Pete said. “Where are wee going?”

“To the dance, duh!” Bob answered.

   “The dance?” I asked.

   “Ya.”

“The dance?! We didn’t even pick up Summer and Vee, yet! How are we supposed to go to the dance without dates?!”

“Oh, I forgots!” Bob turned around and started driving to Summer’s.

“I feel a bit nervous,” Bob said.

   “What? Why?” I asked.

“We don’t have dances in Mwrahland, so this is weird.”

   “Then what do ya do?”

   “Want me to show ya?”

   “Sure.”

Bob started opening the car door.

   “No!” I yelled. “Don’t!”

“Alright, alright!” Bob closed the door as we arrived at Summer’s.

We got out and walked up the front steps. I sighed.

   “Here goes nothing!”

   I knocked on the door.

VEE’S POV

“You look alright, goddamnit!” I told Summer. She was in front of the mirror fixing her hair up in a soft chignon. Her bun at the back and wispy tendrils at her sides.

There was a knock at the door. “Hurry up! They’re probably here, already!” I had already fixed myself up, so I had to answer the door.

   “Pete,” I said.

We stood there for some time until he said, “So, are you guys ready?”

“I think so. C’mon! Summer!” I said. Pete was dressed in dark gray pants and matching vest, a navy blue shirt and a white, red, navy, and dark blue striped plaid tie. He looked handsome. I looked down at his feet.

He was wearing gray Converse low-tops. I smiled.

“You look handsome, Pete!” I said. “Your little pocket thing looks like bunny ears.”

PETE’S POV

THE DOOR SWUNG OPEN. AIR FLEW IN HER FACE.

"PETE", VEE SAID. SHE HAD HER HAIR DOWN AND A CLASSICAL SPAGHETTI-STRAPPED DRESS, WITH THE BLACK VEIL-LIKE LAYER ON TOP OF THE BLACK FABRIC. STUNNING.

THE BLACK HAIR, BLACK EYES, AND BLACK DRESS WENT TOGETHER PERFECTLY.

"ARE YOU GUYS READY?" I MANAGED.

"I THINK SO. C'MON! SUMMER!" SHE WAVED SOMEONE INSIDE TOWARDS THE DOOR.

"YOU LOOK HANDSOME, PETE." VEE SMILED. I GULPED HARD. "YOUR LITTLE POCKET THING LOOKS LIKE BUNNY EARS."

I LAUGHED, LOOKIND DOWN AT MY HANKERCHIEF POCKET THINGY.

"THANKS. YOU LOOK LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A MOVIE, VEE. GORGEOUS," I SAID, LOST IN HER EYES. THIS WAS THE NIGHT,  I DECIDED. THIS WAS THE NIGHT I WOULD TELL HER HOW I FELT; AND HOPED THAT SHE FELT THE SAME. I SIGHED.

“I’M HERE!” SUMMER SAID AS SHE RUSHED OUT THE DOOR TO JOIN ME.

   “OKAY.”

VEE STEPPED OUT AND CLOSED THE DOOR BEHIND HER. WE WALKED TO THE CAR.

SUMMER’S POV

“Andy, you look great!” I hugged him when I saw he was wearing the bright, shiny purple suit I had picked out for him along time ago.

“You’re beautiful, too, Summer,” he smiled.

“Oh my Goth, Bob! That suit fit you well!” I saw him sitting up in the front.

“I know! I feel like a Ken doll!”

“You sure look like one!” I laughed. “Excited, huh, Andy?” I put my hand on his knee.

“Kinda. I’ve never been to a dance before.”

PETE’S POV

VEE SAT NEXT TO ME AND HELD MY HAND. SHE RESTED HER HEAD ON MY CHEST, JUST LIKE THE NIGHT OF BOYD’S PARTY.

I FELT AS IF IT WERE A GREAT DREAM. I DIDN’T KNOW HOW I WOULD TELL HER HOW I FLET. HOW I HAD BEEN HOLDING IT INSIDE, HOW I COULDN’T TELL HER. THIS WAS GOING TO BE A LONG NIGHT.

VEE’S POV

“You smell nice, Pete,” I said.

“I do? Probably that new shampoo I’m using!”

“We’re here!” Bob said. He turned off the engine and opened the door for Summer.

Pete opened the door for me. “Thanks,” I said.

I held his hand and we walked into the gym, where the dance was being held. A lot of people were sitting on the bleachers, chatting, and some were dancing.

   “Shall we dance?” Pete asked.

“No, not right now. Let’s sit!”

We sat at the bleachers, at one of the top benches. I looked down at the lower levels and saw Christi Legassi. She gave me a dirty look.

I flipped her off and her eyes grew wide. She looked away.

I kissed Pete’s check and he just smiled. His cheeks turned red.

“You look handsome, even when you’re nervous.”

ANDY’S POV

I held one of Summer’s arms while Bob held the other. People stared at me, probably because of the shiny purple suit.

Summer and I started dancing with Bob to one of the bands I’d heard in the ‘70’s.

   Ugh, but it didn’t matter.

PETE’S POV

VEE AND I SAT THERE FOR A WHILE, UNTIL I SAID “LET’S DANCE, VEE!”

“NO, LET’S SIT FOR A WHILE LONGER!”

   “WHY?”

“SORRY, PETE. I---I JUST CANT REALLY DANCE.”

I SMILED AT HER. “IT’S OK. LET’S JUST DANCE HOWEVER WE CAN.” I TOOK HER HAND AND WE WENT TO THE DANCE FLOOR.

WE WERE BY THE DARKEST CORNER, WHICH WAS PRETTY LONELY.

A SONG WITH A SOFT MELOY CAME ON. A LOVE SONG, I THINK IT WAS. A SONG THAT CALLED FOR SLOW DANCING.

I WREAPPED MY ARMS AROUND VEE’S WAIST AND SHE PLACED HER HANDS AROUND MY SHOULDERS.

MY HEART RACED. IT WAS STARTING OUT TO BE AS A MAGICAL NIGHT.

VEE’S POV

Pete and I started to slow dance. I felt embarrassed that I didn’t know how to dance. I probably looked like an idiot. I looked up to see Pete’s eyes shining bright. He was smiling and locking eyes with me.

I hadn’t noticed that I felt attracted to Pete before ‘till now. It was too much to take at a time.

RYAN’S POV

Chuck AND I Sat At The Bleachers While We Watched Frank And Nicole Dance. Cheesy, I Thought. But I’d Die To Have Someone To Be With.

   “Look!” Chuck Said.

I Looked Up To See Boyd Hugging Up On Kit Foppe. “Boyd Likes My Cousin?” Chuck Looked Puzzled.

“Not Such A Surprise. Boys Likes All Girls.”

“Look!” Chuck Pointed Off Into The Darkest Corners Of The Gym. “I Didn’t Know That Veronica And Peter Were Going Out! What An Odd Couple, Dontcha Think?”

   No! Just What I Dreaded.

I Balled My Hands Into Fists. I Felt Rage. It Was Now Or Never For Me To Fight For Vee. I Got Up And Headed Towards Them.

“Ryan? Ryan! Where Are You Going?!” I Heard Chuck’s Voice Faint AS I Got Close To Them.

Pete Wentz Was A Dead Man.

PETE’S POV

I BROUGHT Vee her new Crunchwrap Supreme, and sat down at the table with everyone else.

“Who can’t BE EXCITED FOR TONIGHT?” SUMMER ASKED. I SURE WAS. IT HAD TO BE THE BEST.

   “NOT REALLY,” VEE SAID.

“YEAH, IT’S LIKE, WHATEVER,” ANDY SAID.

“YOU GOTTA BE LIKE MESSED UP OR SOMETHING. THAT’S NOT NORMAL,” SUMMER INSISTED.

“WHO SAID I WAS NORMAL?” VEE ASKED. “I’M JUST ANOTHER PSYCHO TRYING TO FIND MY WAY IN LIFE.”

“OKAY…,” SUMMER SAID. “SO THE THEME’S OLD SCHOOL, RIGHT? MY DRESS AND VEE’S DRESS ARE PRETTY CLASSICAL. HOW ABOUT YOU GUYS?”

“YUP. I THINK I’M PRETTY OLD SCHOOL,” I SAID.

   “ME TOO,” ANDY AGREED.

“SHIT! I DIDN’T GO OLD SCHOOL. WHAT AM I S’PPOSE TO WEAR?” BOB ASKED.

“WELL, MY DAD HAS THIS BLACK SUIT WITH A RUFFLED SHIRT THAT HE WORE TO HIS PROM AGES AGO,” SUMMER SUGGESTED. “IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD FIT YOU. HE WORE IT ONCE, AND HE SAYS HE GREW TOO TALL FOR IT LATER.”

   “SURE. THANK’S SAMMY!”

   “IT’S SUMMER!”

   “WHATEV, SALAMI!” SUMMER POUTED.

“WE SHOULD PROBABLY HEAD HOME TO GET READY,” I SAID. “IT’S ALMOST THREE.”

“OKAY, C’MON, SUMMER!’ VEE AND SUMMER WALKED OUTSIDE. WE LEFT SHORTLY AFTER THAT.

SUMMER’S POV

It was still a long time before the dance started, so Vee and I waited on my computer. She got on this dating site.

“No, Vee!” I protested. “I don’t wanna do that!”

“It’s okay, Summer. Let’s just make a false name and stuff. A profile for…Julia Smith!”

“Eww! What a weird name to have!” I said.

“And her screen name is..Smithiegirl. Yep. She’s…sixteen and she’s got a tattoo of Coby Dick on her right arm, and one of Billie Joe on her other arm.” Vee laughed.

“Are you sure about this?” I asked.

“Ya. It’ll be fun. She loves to skinny-dip!”

“Her fave sport is soccer!” I chimed in.

“She hates fish and guys who smell like that!”

“She has a piercing on her forehead and on her toe!”

“She’s obsessed with Coby and Billie! I wonder if anyone will actually wanna date her.” Vee said. “Just leave it on, see if anyone talks to us.”

   “Okay.”

VEE’S POV

I turned on the radio and Papa Roach’s “…To Be Loved” started to play. I did the air guitar and sang along.

“What are you doing?” Summer asked.

“What does it look like I’m doing?” I asked. “C’mon, join me!” I pulled her up next to me and I started singing again.

   I gotta follow my heart/

    No matter how far/

    I gotta roll the dice/

   Never look back/

   And never think twice!”

I saw Summer. She wasn’t even moving. “C’mon, Summer! Sing!”

  “No, it’s weird!”

“How’s it weird? I’m just your friend! It’s not like you’re standing in front of an audience or anything…”

   “It’s just…it is!”

“They should have named you Winter instead,” I said, sighing.

   “Why?”

“Because you’re being so cold to me right now.”

   Summer laughed.

“Fine!” I still sang and did the air guitar. Eventually, Summer gave in too. The song ended and some old guys started to sing church songs, so I switched off the radio.

I jumped off her bed and checked the computer screen. “Oh, Summer! We got a message! Well, a live chat, anyway. C’mon!”

We both sat down and there was some guy with bright red hair and most of his face was pierced. On his forehead, he had ‘Fake’ tattooed.

So this is how the conversation went (the guys screen name was cry and die later):

            Cry’n’dielater: so you like GD?

       Smithiegirl: yup, you?

Cry’n’dielater: ya, do you have any piercings?

Smithiegirl: yes on my forehead and on my toe

Cry’n’dielater: those are weird places to have piercings…

       Smithiegirl: I like them

       Cry’n’dielater: where do you like

       Smithiegirl: Atlanta, ga

   (“Why there?” Summer asked.

“I don’t know, it just came to mind,” I said.

“Aren’t we in California?” she asked.

“Yup. Now be quiet, Summer!”)

            Cry’n’dielater: I can go visit you…

Smithiegirl: why don’t we meet at 1386 Brown st. see you there? Bye.

   “Why’d you stop?” Summer asked.

“I got scared. Look at that guy!” I shrieked.

“Okay, let’s get ready for the dance instead.”

   “Okay.”

PETE’S POV

INSTEAD OF GOING STRAIGHT HOME, I WENT TO JUDY’S SALON. LUCKILY, CHRISTI WASN’T THERE, ONLY HER MOM JUDY, WAS.

“HI, MRS. LEGASSI!” I SAID AS I WALKED INTO THE SALON.

“WELL, HI PETER!” JUDY SMILED. “WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE TODAY?”

“I, UH, NEED TO BUY SOME HAIR CREAM, THAT’LL BE ALL. I NEED IT TO MAKE MY HAIR SOFT AND UH, STUFF,” I TOLD HER.

   “WELL, HERE.”

SHE HANDED ME A LIME-GREEN BOTTLE THAT READ: ‘X-TREME HAIR CREAM!! KEEPS YOU HAIR LOOKING AND FEELING X-TREME!!-LY SOFT!!” THEN THERE WAS A PICTURE OF A GUY THAT LOOKED LIKE BRAD PITT. HIS HAR LOOKED REALLY SOFT, LIKE IT WAS A WIG.

“THANKS,” I SAID TO HER, AND PAID HER.

THEN I WENT TO PEMBERTON’S DEPARTMENT STORE AND BOUGHT A MEN’S PERFUME.

AS I WAS LOOKING THROUGH THE PERFUME AISLE, I SPOTTED FRANKIE A FEW AISLES AWAY, LOOKING AT SOME TIMES. I THOUGHT THAT WE PROBABLY LOOKED LIKE OLD GUYS, LOOKING AT TIES AND PERFUMES.

   “HEY, FRANKIE!” I CALLED.

HE TURNED AROUND AND SMILED. “HI, DUDE.”

“BUYING SOME TIES FOR THE BIG DANCE?”

“YA. I GOTTA LOOK MY BEST CUZ I’M GOING WITH NICOLE.”

   “NICOLE?”

   “YA. SHE’S GREAT.”

   “OH.”

   “SO WHO’S YOUR DATE, WENTZ?”

   “VEE, OF COURSE,” I SMILED.

“I THOUGHT YOU WERE TAKING CHRISTI LEGASSI,” FRANKIE SAID, PICKING UP A RED TIE.

“HUH? WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT?”

“WELL, SHE KEPT TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU GUYS HUNG OUT AT BURGER BUNNIES WITH THAT FRIEND OF HERS, LOLA AND ANA MARIA. I SIT NEXT TO HER IN ONE CLASS, SO I PRETTY MUCH HEARD IT ALL.”

“WELL, NO! I’M GOING WITH VEE, AND THAT’S FINAL!”

“CHILLAX! Okay, well, see you later dude!” frankIE walked back to the back of the tie section. then i piCked out a ring and boght it with the perfume, and hurried home.

i took another shower, without conditioner. this time i used up all my soap and shampoo.

the whole time something was troubling me. was chriti telling everyone that thing at BB’s? what if word got back to vee? what if christi dramatized what happened and made it sound like i was interested in her?

i shook these thought away, and started thinking about what a great time i would have with vee at the dance. i sighed as i walked out of the shower and fixed myself up. it was going to be a magical night.

freshman freak or comeback of the year

[[ch47]]

ANDY’S POV

That evening after John Boyd’s death, I called everyone to let them know that tomorrow was going to be both John and John Boyd’s funeral. I asked them to wear dark clothing; black.

It had taken me a long time to fix up the funeral, but it was finally done.

VEE’S POV

The next day was probably the saddest day ever. Everyone was pretty quite until the funeral, after school. It was held by Andy in the park.

“We are gathered her today to say good-bye and farewell to our beloved babies, John Hurley and John Boyd Urie Conde. They left this world in this week, and now are going to go to a better place, to egg heaven. Let’s have this moment of silence in their honor.”

We stood around, silence pretty much making the air seem thicker with grief, almost suffocating. “It’s as a proud parent of both these babies, that I would like to say that they were the best sons you could ever ask for. They changed my life,” Andy spoke up; his eyes welled up with tears. Some rolled down his cheeks.

“Does anyone else have anything to say?” he took in a deep sigh, looking up at us.

“Me,” I replied, and got up from the chair in which I sat in. “I think that Lola was a stupid bitch who shouldn’t’ve ever been a mother. All she thinks about is hair and nails and boobs,” I rolled my eyes. “Her own. She shall never be forgiven for been the murderer of John Boydie, accidental or not. I really didn’t know him, but I knew how much he meant to you, Andy, and there’s no doubt in my mind that he was the best.

“John Boyd Urie Conde was my son,” I continued. “I think that he was also like John Hurley, perfect in every way. He was so cute and chubby. He loved his step-dad, Andy. They had great times together. I’ll miss you both. You were great egg babies.”

Summer got up when I sat down. “The friendliest egg babies in the entire world are gone, now. I feel sympathy for the parents. I would never be able to live, knowing that my baby was dead. I hope you are better in heaven, John H. and John U.”

   “Bob?” Andy asked.

“Um, yeah? Oh, yeah, um, I’m so sorry,” he said bitterly and distractedly. Summer kicked him. “Okay. I know that you are probably hanging out with Gree-Yees somewhere in the green Mwrahland skies, playing with all the baby egg girls.”

Everyone laughed. “Who’s Gree-Yees?” Summer asked.

Bob acknowledged her with a nod and promised to tell her later.

   “Pete?”

“I wish both Johns the best in the afterlife, and a successful one. That everyone of their wishes come true. And that they remember their favorite parents.”

PETE’S POV

I ASKED VEE FOR A KISS WHEN WE WERE ALONE AT THE HIDEOUT. SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH, SHE GAVE IT TO ME; A SWEET AND GENTLE ONE.

   “THANKS,” I GRINNED.

THE DOOR TO THE HIDEOUT OPENED, AND I RUSHED SUMMER, ANDY, AND BOB.

“OH MY GOD, PETE!” SUMMER HUGGED ME. “YOU’RE GONNE BE OKAY, RIGHT?”

“YEAH. PERFECT, JUST, OOH! YOU’RE STEPPING ON MY FOOT!”

   “SORRY, PETE. DIDN’T KNOW!”

EVERONE SAT DOWN ON EITHER THE BEAN BAGS OR THE RUG. “I’M REAL SORRY, PETE.” ANDY SAID, HIS EYES LOOKING SAD. “IT’S JUST—I DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO CONTROL MY ANGER, YOU KNOW? I COULDN’T BEAR TO LOSE ANOTHER SON!” HE WHIMPERED, AND SUMMER HUGGED HIM.

“IT’S ALRIGHT, HURLER. I GET IT,” I SAID, AS VEE MASSAGED MY LEG.

“DON’T CALL ME THAT, LEWIS!” ANDY SHOT BACK.

“QUIET, JOHN!” OH-UH! I THOUGHT. SHOULDN’T’VE SAID THAT.

“JOHN! JOHN BOYD!” ANDY YELLED. “WHY HIM?!” HE BURST INTO TEARS.

“PETE!” VEE SQUEAKED, PRESSING DOWN ON THE BURN.

“AHH! I’M SORRY! I FORGOT!” I YELPED IN PAIN.

“BOY,” BOYD SAID. “THIS PLACE LOOKS LIKE A HOSPITAL. SOMEONE’S HURT, SOMEONE’S CRYING, THERE’S NURSES…ITS DEPPRESING. HEY! THERE’S BURSES! NURSES GIVE SPONGE BATHS!” BOB SMILED.

“GOOD THINKING, BOB! VEE?” I LOOKED UP AT HER.

“HELL NO! YOU’RE BURNED, NOT CRIPPLED!”

   “AWW, C’MON, NOW!”

   “NO!” SHE HUGGED ANDY.

“FINE, PICK ANDY OVER ME!’ I WAS PISSED.

“I WILL!” SHE RAN HER FINGERS THROUGH ANDY’S LOCKS. THERE WAS A LONG SILENCE, UNTIL I SPOKE UP.

“YOU KNOW, VEE…IT’S GETTING PRETTY COLD HERE,” I SAID, PATTING THE SPACE ON THR RUG NEXT TO ME, TRYING TO LURE HER BACK IN.

“AND WARM OVER HERE!” SHE HUGGED THE NOW ONLY RED FACED ANDY CLOSE.

“VEE!” I WHINED. “DON’T BE LIKE THAT!”

SHE IGNORED ME AND PLAYED WITH ANDY’S HAIR. “I WISH YOU’D PLAY WITH MY HAIR!” SHE STILL IGNORED ME UNTIL I STARTED TO POUT WITH PUPPY DOG EYES.

“FINE, YOU WIN THIS ROUND, WENTZ! BUT IT’S ONLY ‘CAUSE OF THAT PRETTY BOY FACE! C’MON ANDY!” SHE AND ANDY SAT NEXT TO ME. I HUGGED VEE.

“YOU LIKE TO MAKE ME SUFFER, DON’T YOU?” I SIGHED.

“YUP,” SHE GRINNED. “YOUR PAIN IS MY PLEASURE.”

BOB’S POV

In the afternoon, I went to buy a suit for the up and coming dance, with Pete and Andy.

“I don’t need to buy one, the girls already bought mine,” Andy said.

   “Huh? Really? When?” Pete interrogated.

“Yup. Don’t you remember the one they bought at the mall for me, the day we were pretty much their puppets and they played dress up? The costumes? The shiny purple one?”

“You’re gonna take that to the dance?” Pete seemed surprised.

“Ya, I like it. I mean, I don’t wanna fall into steps with the Barbie clones and Kents, y’know? I don’t wanna be traditional. I wanna mix it up a bit and not be a conformist. What’s the point of going to an event if you have your outfit picked out by everyone already?”

   “It’s flashy,” Pete commented.

“You’ll look like you were going to a dance in Mwrahland,” I added. “It’s a tradition for men to wear shiny purple, neon green, golden or yellow suits, but never neon blue ones to a dance. The gals usually wear either black, gray, brown, or red suits with prints of our ancient God, a Gran*.”

“Eww, they sound like they lived in like, the nineties or something,” Pete exclaimed.

“Why don’t you ever wear blue suits?” Andy lifted his thick rimmed glasses back up his nose, looking a little interested.

Light blue,” I corrected. “Anyway, our ancient God, a Gran, was names Gree-Yees, Ree-yees’ distant cousin, who had a fight with a blue-skinned  Toydarian**, on who would rule us, the humanoids of Mwrahland. Gree-Yees won the battle with Narakin, the Toydarians’ leader. Ever since those ancient times, it’s been taboo to wear light blue clothing in honor of Gree-Yees.”

“That would suck. Then I wouldn’t be able to wear my Say Anything shirt,” Andy complained, looking down at his light blue SA band tee, with the graphic of a black-outlined white dinosaur spitting out orange fire and attacking a town with little people in it. I knew it was one of his favorites. “Where do you get all this stuff from, Bob?”

“From…I’m not sure. I just know it all. “Because I’m a Mwrahlandian, duh!” I laughed.

“I think he’s gone loco!” Pete whispered.

“I heard that!” I yelled. He stared at me, surprised. “Us Mwrahlandians have super sensitive ears, so all night I can hear Drocks***; insects who bite your flesh like mosquitoes, who also in habit Nam Chorios near our planet.”

   “Err, whatever you say, Bob.”

PETE’S POV

“I SHALL LOOK PERFECT IN THIS!” I SAID AS I PICKED UP A DARK GRAY SUIT. “I’LL WEAR THIS WITH A NAVY BLUE DRESS SHIRT AND A NAVY, WHITE AND DARK TEAL PLAID TIE!” I I HOLD BACK MY EXCITEMENT.

“NICE, PETE. TRY IT ON,” ANDY ENCOURAGED. “I’LL TRY THIS BLACK BUTTON UP ON.”

“I HOPE THIS BLACK SET FITS ME!” BOB SAID, AS WE THREE WALKED INTO THE SEPARATE DRESSING ROOMS.

   “FITS!” I ANNOUNCED.

“AFFERMATIVE HERE AS WELL,” ANDY SAID.

“YUP, JUST THR RIGHT SIZE!” WE CHANGED BACK INTO OUR NORMAL CLOTHES AND NOUGHT IT. THEN WE LEFT FOR HOM.

*Gran-  A Gran is a fictional Star Wars character from the planet Kinyen and Malastare. It had three eyes and weird elephant like ears, and pig-like ears smaller than the others, atop its head, with little antenna like thingies. Besides that fact, it pretty much looks like a normal human being, save fer the fact that their skin is brown and spotted.

**Toydarian- A Toydarian is also another fictionalized Star Wars species, that come from the planet Toydaria. They’re short and fat and fly. The most likely one ye’ve ever seen is Watto, the trader who had Anakin and his mother as  slaves and workers on his shop in Mos Espa, Tatooine, on Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menance.

***Drocks- Drocks are ones that Kim and I made up, so yeah. They’re s’pose to look like mosquitoes.

VEE’S POV

“Andy! Control yourself!!” I got up and stopped abruptly as I witnessed the end of John Boydie’s life. Ms. G was clutching him so hard her hands were red. He cracked open in her hands and she let him fall to the ground, his yolk spilling all over the classroom floor. Andy got on his knees, his fave read as he saw his dead egg son.

“Andy, it’s okay,” I assured him in a hoarse whisper.

He got back on his feet reluctantly and kicked over the pan to the ground. The boiling pan was aimed at Christi Legassi. Even if Andy was mad, he didn’t let the revenge part of his brain turn off. I smiled inwardly. It would be real perfect if she got burned. But that wasn’t the case.

Christi let out a yelp and jumped atop the table when the boiling pan ricocheted from her seat and hit Pete’s leg.

“Ahh!” he screamed in a pain. I ran to where Pete was. So did the rest of the gang.

PETE’S POV

CHRISTI YELLED “HELP!” AND JUMPED UNDER HER TABLE.

OH, SHIT! I THOUGHT WHEN I SAW THE PAN THAT ANDY KICKED OVER HEADING MY WAY.

“AHH!” I YELPED WHEN THE PAN HIT MY LEG. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME, I WAS WEARING CARGOS ALL THE WAY JUST ABOVE MY ANKLE, SO THERE WAS SOME BARE SKIN. AND THE PAN HAD PICKED THAT SPOT TO HIT.

THE GROUP RAN MY WAY. OTHER PEOPLE ENCIRCLED AROUND ME.

“ARE YOU OKAY?” I HEARD CHRISTI’S FAINT VOICE AS SHE TRIED TO PUSH THROUGH VEE AND BOBERT TO GET TO ME. VEE JUST PUSHED HER HAND AWAY WITH HER ELBOW.

“YOU’LL LIVE THROUGH THIS, RIGHT WENTZ?” VEE ASKED.

“‘COURSE. MAN-CANDY CAN DO THAT.” I SMILED. SUMMER AND VEE LAUGHED. “OOH! MY SKIN BURNS!” I SAID AS VEE TOUCHED THE BURNT AREA.

   “SORRY, PETER,” SHE APOLOGIZED.

“OMG! IT’S SO RED!” SUMMER SAID.

“YAH, LIKE SANTA’S NOSE!” BOB YELLED.

“LET ME TAKE YOU TO THE NURSE’S OFFICE,” VEE OFFERED. “COME ON.” SHE TOOK MY ARM AND WE MADE OUR WAY THROUGH THE PEOPLE.

WE WALKED THROUGH THR HALLWAY. “I THOUGH YOU SAID WE WERE GING TO THE NURSE’S OFFICE,” I SAID AS WE SKIPPED IT.

“NO, PETE. WE’RE GOING TO THE HIDEOUT. DO YOU THINK ANY EFFING MIDDLE SCHOOL NURSE CAN TAKE CARE OF YOU BETTER THAN ME? YOU KNOW THAT YOU’LL HAVE TO WAIT FOR LIKE AN HOUR BEFORE YOU EVEN SEE HER. AND THEN THEY’LL ONLY SEND YOU HOME.”

I LAUGHED. “I GUESS YOU’RE RIGHT, MS. CONDE.”

VEE’S POV

Pete and I got into our secret room. I sat him down in the rug as I got out some ice packs.

“I remember the last time we were here,” Pete said. “Right after our fight with Brendon Flowers and those other people these days, huh?”

   “Pretty much.”

“Does it still hurt?” I asked.

“A little bit, but not that much.” I started to put rub-on alcohol on his leg. “Vee?” he asked.

“Hmm?” I looked up at Pete.

“You know what would make it better?”

   “What?”

“If you gave me a kiss.” He grinned

“Oh, okay.” I kissed his cheek.

   “No, not there.” He frowned.

“Then here?” I asked as I kissed his hurt leg.

“No, not there either. I want one on the lips.” He smiled really big.

   “Why?”

   “Just because. Please?”

“Fine.” I kissed Pete quickly on the lips.

He grinned. “That was good. Thanks.”

freshman freak or comeback of the year[[ch44]]

freshman freak or comeback of the year

[[ch44]]

BOB’S POV

It was our final day with our kid eggs, and Summer and I wee sitting at Ms. G’s health class with Zimmy.

“It’s the end of your journey with your baby, and I’m really truly sorry to announce. Now, please pass up your eggs along with your essays.” Ms. G said.

“Bye, Zimmy,” Summer kissed the baby. A tear formed at the pit of her eye.

I took Zimmy. “Bye, Zimster. Don’t flirt with the boys! And if you do get serious, use protection, or you’ll end up like me and your mom, with a kid and still in high school.” I whispered the last part.

“Eww! Zimmy’s not like that. She punched me as I passed her to Ms. G. “She’s just a baby!”

   I shrugged.

“I’m just giving her advice for when she’s a teen.”

“No! Zimmy’s only gonna do that until she gets married.”

Summer lay her head on my shoulder. “I’ll miss our little Zimmy, Bobby,” she said. “She was so perfect.”

PETE’S POV

I TOOK A SEAT BY CHRISTI LEGASSI IN HEALTH CLASS. LAUREN WAS ON THE TABLE AND I GRABBED HER.

   “HI, PETE,” CHRISTI SAID.

“HELLO,” I GREETED. I HUGGED LAUREN CLOSE.

THEN SOMETHING WONDERFUL HAPPENED. MS. GALVES ANNOUNCED THAT TODAY WOULD BE THE LAST DAY OF THE EXPIREMENT.

I FELT LIE JUMPING UP AND SAYING “YES! YES! I DON’T HAVE TO SPEND TIME WITH YOU ANYMORE, CHRISTI!” BUT I DIDN’T.  JUST SMILED REAL BIG AND SIGHED.

“AWW!’ CHRISTI WHINED. “WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE OVER SO FAST?! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! ARENT YOU UPSET THAT IT’S OVER, TOO, PETE?”

“NAH, NOT REALLY,” I REPLIED TRUTHFULLY. “I’VE GOT BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN BE A TEEN PARENT. OR A…HUSBAND.”

   SHE FROWNED.

“THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT HURTS TO SEE THE BABY GO,” I ADDED. “”CAUSE IT DOES, YA KNOW?”

“I KNOW,” SHE SIGHED, TAKING MY HAND. “IT DOES.” CHRISTI TURNED TO ME. “BUT THAT’S JUST PART OF BEING A PARENT.”

I SNATCHED AWAY MY HAND FROM CHRISTI. I PASSED UP LAUREN AND SMILED. “AT LEAST YOU’RE GOING TO A BETTER PLACE WITH MORE EGG BABY PLAYMATES, I SMILED.THEN I PASSED UP THE ESSAY I WROTE.

I LET OUT A LONG, PLEASANT SIGN. I WOULD FINALLY NOT HAVE TO HANG-OUT FORCEFULLY FROM CHRISTI.

VEE’S POV

“Oh, no!” Andy said when he heard the news. “They can’t take my step-son away!” he hugged John Boydie. “They can’t!”

“I don’t want little John Boydie to go, either, Andy,” I said. “If you want him so bad, why don’t you ask Ms. Galvez if you can keep him after she’s done grading the project?”

“Alright, I will.” Andy smiled and said. “Don’t worry, John Boydie! Don’t be scared! We’ll be together again! Soon!” then he kissed John Boydie’s white head.

   “Aww,” I said. “That’s what I call a great step-daddy.”

“Well, I’m happy that this stupid project’s over,” Boyd muttered. “It was dumb, and my kid barely spent any time with me at all! He was always with Andy! I mean, how can you live with yourself? You’ve taught Boydie to love someone who isn’t even his real dad! One of you amantes*!” he complained.

“Boyd, shut up! No one asked for you opinion. And Andy’s not my amante, he’s my friend, Boyd senior,” I snapped. “Maybe John Boydie wanted to hang with Andy because he was a good dad, unlike you!” I shot back.

   “Guys, don’t shout!” Andy urged.

Boyd pouted and put his hood over his head. I rolled my eyes.

I leaned in to whisper to John Boydie. “Aren’t you grateful that I didn’t raise you like him?”

   Andy laughed.

Boyd grunted and buried his face behind his arms.

Then, with great difficulty, Andy passed up John Boydie.

RYAN’S POV

“Don’t You Think It Was A Good Experience, Ryan?” Kit Asked As We Turned In Our Egg.

I Wasn’t Paying Attention. I Was Thinking About The Encounter I Had With Vee Earlier. Why Hadn’t She Wanted To Talk To Me? Was I That Much Of A Jerk? I Didn’t Deserve This! I Sighed.

   “Ryan?” Kit Asked Again.

   “Huh? Oh. I Mean, Yeah.”

“Poor Jamie. Where is She Going To Go?”

Kit Got Her Questioned Answered. “Children, Now That I Have The Eggs, I Want you To Know What I’m Going To Do With Them.” She Pulled Out A Portable Camping Stove, And A Rusty Pan. She Put Some Olive Oil On It And Looked Up At Us. “I’m Going To Make Scrambled Eggs!

There Were Lots Of Gasps And Shouts From The Students. Ms. Galvez Just Smiled And Cracked One Of The Many Open.

“Ah!” screamed Nicole Duncan. “It’s Tony!” Ms. Galvez Took Another Odd One That Was Wearing A T-Shirt, Reading:

I Listen To Green Day with My Step-Daddy

ANDY’S POV

Ms. G was going on an egg baby killing spree! She cracked the babies open and out into the boiling pan. She picked out her next victim.

   John Boydie! Oh no!

“STOP!” I yelled, turning heads. Ms. G looked up at me confused. I got up from where I sat and pushed her against the wall with such force…”Why are you trying to kill my son?” I screamed in her face. She seemed terrified.

“Answer me!” I yelled, louder. I turned to see the hand in which she was holding John Boyd. She had been pressing it hard, and it broke in her bare hands.

I gasped as she released her grip and John Boyd fell to the ground, shattering onto the floor, his liquid-y yellow yolk looking back at me.

Buzznet exclusive: FFTL's T. Ritcher talks side project with FFTL drummer: 'It's Dancy, Screamy'!!!

From First to Last released their third full-length earlier this year and guitarist Travis Richter has revealed exclusively to Buzznet that the band has plans to work on two different music projects this fall.

"Our drummer Derek Bloom and myself have a side project called The Color of Violence. We're putting out a record on Epitaph and we are recording it in my personal studio beginning in November," Richter told Buzznet's own DJ Rossstar.

Unlike From First to Last, whose vocalist is currently Matt Good, Richter will be stepping up to the micrphone for Violence, with Derek playing all of the instruments. "It's heavy, surfy, dancy, screamy, catchy," Richter declared, describing the project.

And as for guest vocalists on the record ... "I'm praying and fasting for 40 days and nights for God to come down and do a guest vocal."

Looks like Richter will need to learn how to balance his time as he also announced that From First to Last would begin writting their new record this fall/winter.

Vee’s POV

Yes! Yes! I thought when I awoke to the sunlight seeping through the curtains of my window. The week was finally over, meaning, so was my hell with Boyd! Woo hoo!

I raced to the bathroom and took a quick shower, dressed, blow dried and straight-ironed my hair; basically did my daily morning routine. I grabbed my backpack and took two of the stairs at a time. I was literally jumping up and down the sidewalk as I walked to school. I wasn’t paying attention and accidentally bumped into a hooded figure. My binder, which had a glossy poster of The Academy Is… behind the laminated behind the cover, fell onto the floor. At least I didn’t have John Boyd with me! I thought.   It would be absolutely horrible to have him and break him on the last day of the experiment!

The gray hooded figure turned around. I felt my blood turn cold. It was Ryan!

Ryan’s POV

I Was Humming the Rhythm to the New Song I Had Helped Create with My Band, Bringing Down the Gorilla, As I Walked To School that Morning. Chuck Had Been Really Helpful In The Writing, So The Lyrics Rocked and Rhymed, While They Still Made Sense.

Every Song Has A Plot, And This New Song Just Happened To be About A Girl And A Guy Who Had Been Friends For An Eternity And Realized That There Was Something More Than Friendship There. They Realized They Were In Love. But Then there Was this Guy Who interfered And Won The Girl.

Boyd Loved Singing it, Because He Said That It Was Just the Kinda Cheesy Stuff The Chicks Dug, And Singing It Would Get Him Laid. Of Course, That Wasn’t The Reason Chuck And I Had Written it, So We Took Offense.

Anyway, I Was Walking And Bumped Into Something. Better Said, Someone. I Turned And Caught A Flash Of her Face That Quickly Hid Behind Dark Blue Inky Hair. I Gazed At that Familiar Face, Wondering If I Was Hallucinating.

   “Vee,” I Managed To Say.

She Glared At me Angrily. “Don’t Talk To Me.” She Kneeled Down To Pick Up Her binder that Had Fallen During The Collision, And Hurried Away.

“Vee, Wait!” I Took A Hold Of her Arm, Tightening My Grip When She Tried To Get Away. “Please, Let Us Talk About This!”

“I Have Nothing To Talk With You About. Now Let Me Go Before…Before I Kick your Ass, Ryan!”

“Vee, C’mon! Please Don’t Be A Hard-Ass! I Misunderstood, and I’m Sorry For My Idiocy. But I Can’t Do Much About It Now, Can I? I Can’t Take It Back! I Have Faith In Us, And I Know For A Fact that We Can Work This Out. We Can Find A Way! Just Give Me A Chance, Vee! Give Us A Chance!” I Unconsciously Loosened My grip On Her As I Spoke, So She Managed To Get Away. “I’m Sorry, Vee!” I Yelled Behind Her. “Please, Come Back!”

I Sighed. Why Couldn’t She just Forgive And Forget?

But I Knew It Wasn’t Over. If I Wanted Vee, I Had to Fight For Her.

SUMMER’S POV

I checked my backpack to make sure I had the reflection paper on the egg project on my way to school. The teacher had assured us that the reflection counted as a big part of our grades, so yeah. I didn’t wanna get a bad grade because of that.

I turned on Gerard Way and looked up. I saw a girl who appeared to be Vee. She was walking and she bumped into a dude. Is that Ryan? I thought. It did look like him, but I couldn’t be sure that he was.

Vee picked something up and was walking away, when Ryan took her arm. After a while she ran. What was going on? I ran over to where Vee had scurried off to.

   “Vee, what’s wrong?”I asked.

She looked surprised to see me. “Why?”

   “I thought I…Was that Ryan?”

   “Yeah.”

“Why’d you run? Aren’t you in love with him or something?”

“That idiot wanted me to talk to him. But not anymore. I’ll do what it takes to avoid him. Summer, I really don’t wanna talk about it, okay?”

“Sure. Anyway, I loved the black dress you bought for the dance! It’s so cute!”

“Shut up Summer! I would have never gotten it, but you talked me into it! I don’t like to wear that kinda stuff, and you smothering me with that cheesy shit isn’t helping my regret!”

“But you looked so pretty!” I insisted. “And it’s probably non-refundable. If you return it now, you wont have a dress!”

“No! Don’t tell me that!” she buried her face in her hands.

“Oh em gee Vee! You’re being super sarcastic!”

“Ya, whatever,” she rolled her eyes at me. “Are you sad the egg project’s over, now?”

“Super bummed! You wouldn’t believe it, Vee! I don’t think I can live without Zimmy!” I cried.

“Oh, cheer up, Summer! I’m sure you’ll be fine. I’ll be relieved! As happy as an Ortolan* in an all you can eat buffet! No more time with stuck-up Boyd! Woo hoo!” Vee cheered. “But I’d probably be happier if I hadn’t bumped into Ryan. He ruined my good mood and set me sour,” she frowned.

* An Ortolan is a Star Wars creature that resides in the planet Orto. It eats a lot on other planets; b/c food is super scarce in their own homeworld. Ye’ve probably seen an Ortolan on Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The Fat, blue Ortolan, Max Rebo, keyboardist of the Max Rebo band, in Jabba’s palace during the capture of princess Leia.  They look like this:

[[ch42]]

VEE’S POV

“Bye then, you guys!” We waved and exited the school, walking al the way to the bus stop.

“I’m real excited to buy myself a dress!!” Summer grinned.

“I’m worried about the dance, though,” I confessed to Summer.

“What? Why?” she asked. “You’re never really worried about anything!”

   “Well…I really can’t dance, Summer.”

She laughed. “Wow! I just found out Vee Conde’s deepest darkest secret!”

“Shut up!” I laughed and hit her on the arm lightly.

“Oh, the bus is here,” Summer said.

We hopped onto the bus and sat down next to some old man who was sleeping.

“Why do we have to sit here?” Summer whispered. “Let’s sit somewhere else.”

“These are the only seats available. That is unless you wanna sit next to her.” I gestured towards a lady a few seats away that had cats and dogs sitting all over her, on her lap, on her head; just everywhere! She kept swatting the air at flies around her.

SUMMER’S POV

“Never mind,” I muttered when Vee pointed at the crazy woman. I sat there impatiently, picturing what the perfect dress would look like when I saw the old man grab me by the shoulders.

   “Vee!” I whispered. “He’s moving!”

All of a sudden, he threw himself at me and pulled me into a hug. The old man stank of a ton of perfume. I yelped and Vee couldn’t help but laugh.

“Get him off me!” I pleaded. Vee laughed harder as his eyes suddenly popped open. I yelled.

“Sorry,” he said through fake teeth. He backed off me and sat upright. Then he straightened up his barely-there hair. “Hello ladies. My name’s Douglass Burke. I used to be a soldier in the Vietnam War. I had a son who joined the army…”

The old man kept blabbing on the way old people do and Vee and I looked at each other like ‘did we ask for this guy’s life story?’

“I think that the children of today are too wild. All they do is listen to rock music, the Devil’s music and have black stuff coming out their eyes. When they listen to that satanic music, they get possessed or something and they move their heads back and forth as if their necks are broken…”

“Think what you want, sir. Punk is in,” I replied as Vee and I got off at our stop.

“Oh my goth!” she said as soon as we walked into the mall. “That guy was so rude!”

“Ya,” I answered. “Only ‘cause they are like, old and stuff, people excuse their behavior. It’s dumb.”

“So, what store should we hit up first, eh?” Vee asked.

“How about this one over here?” We walked into a store with dresses displayed on the windows.

“Err, excuse me, miss,” I said to a woman sitting behind the counter, smacking gum loudly. “Do you have red dresses here?”

“Yeah, kiddo,” she answered, pointing me the way. “Fifth row in the back.”

“Gosh, Summer! You’re too excited, don’t you think?” Vee asked as we neared the racks.

“Oh, my! Look at that one!” I gasped. “It’s so pretty!” I pointed at the red strap-less dress. I grabbed it and rushed into the nearby fitting room. I tried it on, just to find it was a perfect fit! I squealed and walked outside of the room. Vee was standing there, waiting for me. Her eyes went wide, and she smiled.

“Whoa, Summer!” she yelled excitedly. “You look fan-fucking-tabulous!”

I smiled. “Do I really look good?” I asked, worried.

   “Hell yeah!”

   I grinned.

“Andy and Bob’ll be real happy to have such a cute dancing partner.”

I felt myself flush. “Well, Vee!” I said. “Now it’s your turn.”

“Nah, I don’t wanna take a dress, Summer!”

“No, c’mon! please!” I pouted, looking at her with puppy dog eyes. She covered her face. “You have to change your mind! A prom isn’t a prom without dress wearers!”

“No! You’re pure evil, Summer! Using those eyes on me! I’m not gonna do it! Please don’t use that face on me, it makes me feel guilty!”

“Pweeze, Vee! Make an exception for your old friend, Summer!”

Vee sighed. “Fine, Summer. Fine.” I grinned in victory.

PETE’S POV

CHRISTI AND I WALKED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING, FEELING THE WARMTH OF THE SUN. CHRISTI SIGHED. UH-OH. I KNEW THAT MEANT TROUBLE UP AHEAD.

“IT’S SUCH A PRETTY DAY, TODAY, PETE,” SHE TOLD ME, AS I DIDN’T HAVE EYES TO KNOW THIS MYSELF. “THERE’S PLENTY OF THINGS TO DO TODAY, TOO.” SHE ADDED.

   “I GUESS SO,” I REPLIED.

“CAN YOU CARRY MY BACKPACK FOR ME, PETE?” SHE ASKED.

[[ch41]]

VEE’S POV

I pulled on Pete’s borrowed shirt and we started to walk back to the locker rooms when we heard someone say “Oh, there you are, Pete!” I looked up and a particular brunette stood behind us, approaching our group. She kept looking Pete up and down.

Damn! I thought. Didn’t that girl ever give up?

“Where were you? I was looking all over for you!” she smiled sweetly at Pete.

“I—We were hanging out behind the bleachers,” Pete answered. Christi looked angrily at my erm, Pete’s shirt.

   “Doing what?!” she snapped.

   “Uh…” Pete stuttered nervously.

“Well, we can’t really tell you, just…stuff,” I answered, smiling at Pete.

“Ya…stuff,” Pete played along. “Physical stuff.”

“Christi looked disgusted. “Um, see ya later, Pete.”

   We all laughed.

“That was nasty, Vee!” Summer told me. I just grinned and lightly slapped Pete’s ass.

“Hey!” Pete laughed. “What was that for?”

I shrugged. “In case she was looking?”
“Right.” His smile widened and he shook his head as Summer and I walked into the girls’ locker room.

SUMMER’S POV

We were getting our stuff in the lockers when I walked over to Vee.

   “Uh, Vee?”

   “Ya?”
   “Are we going shopping afterschool?”

“What? For what? We just went a while ago,” she pointed out as she slung her backpack over her shoulder.

   “For dresses of course!”

   Dresses?!”

I rolled my eyes. “Ya, for the dance! I’m gonna get a pretty dark purple one!”

“Fine. But I’m not getting a dress.” I rolled my eyes. Ever since I’d known Vee, I’d only seen her wear a dress few enough times to count on my fingers.

“We collected our things and left. Then we walked back into the main school building, holding our little egg babies’ boxes. I sighed and glanced down at Zimmy. “She’s so cute my baby Zimmy, isn’t she?”

“Yep. John Boyd’s real handsome, too,” Vee said. “Andy’s a fright stepdad.”

I halted. Vee saw me and stopped, too.

“Oh, no!” I gasped. “I can’t believe it!”

“What is it, Summer?” Vee asked.

   “I forgot! I totes forgot!”

   “What?”

“To give him the shirt! Where’s Bob?” I asked Vee. She scanned the hallway.

“Umm, right…there!” She pointed to the drinking fountain and sure enough my hubby Bobert was over there, taking a sip. We rushed over to Bob.

“Bob!” I squealed. “Zimmy and I’ve got a present for you!”

“Really?” Bob’s eyes got shiny and real big as he looked up at me. I took out the shirt and gave it to him.

“Ooh, this is totes cool!” Bob yelled and put it on. He smiled real big at us, then turned. He stared at a guy a few lockers down, talking to a bottle-blonde chick. Bob ran over. He grabbed the guy by the collar of his polo shirt and the guy’s eyes went wide with fear. Vee, the chick, and I gasped.

“Hey!” Bob yelled at Wide Eyes. Wide Eyes gulped loudly. “You wanna know something’?”

“I—I guess s-so s-sir,” he responded in a shaky voice. Bob pulled him nearer and looked him in the eye.

“I’m the fuckin’ best daddy in the world, and you’re not, you toad! HAHA!” He yelled and let the guy go, cracking up.   Wide Eyes and the bottle-blonde exchanged confused looks and then quickly disappeared into the crowd of passing people. Vee and I stared at Bobby, really confoosed. He took Zimmy from my eyes and kissed her head gently, then he got up and started dancing with her, humming a Cobra Starship song.

“Uh…Bob? Are you feeling okay?” Vee asked.

Bob smiled. “Ya, really good like the best daddy in the world, which I am!” he grinned. He put Zimmy back in the safety of her box and grabbed it. “Well, bye!” He waved and headed out the door.

“Bye, Zimmy! See you tomorrow!” I waved. Vee sighed.

“I wish little John Boydie had a biological daddy like Bob!” Vee told me. “He’s so nice!”

“At least ya have Andy, right?” I told her.

   “Ya, he rocks!” She grinned.

“You guys, wait up!” Pete told us as he ran to catch up. Andy did the same.

PETE’S POV

I HAD JUST GOTTEN OUT OF MY LOCKER ROOM AND INTO THE SCHOOL HALLWAY WHEN I SAW Vee and Summer talking up ahead of me. Andy was walking with me.

“You guys, wait up!” I yelled to them as I ran to where they were. Andy ran, too.

   They both turned around.

“Hey, Andy!” Andy and Vee hugged. I felt envious. Why couldn’t I be John Boyd’s stepdad?

“How’s John Boydie been today, Vee?” he cradled the egg box in his arms.

“Great, Andy.” Vee grinned. “Oh, hi Pete!”

Andy and Summer waved at each other.

“Hi, Vee. How come I don’t get a hug?” I pouted.

“Aww, come here!” She and Summer hugged me. I grinned, man candy once again.

“So…Where were you girls going?” I asked them.

   “Um…to the mall,” Summer answered.

“ya, to BUY SUMMER’S dress for the dance,” Vee added.

   “oh.”

“Yuck!” Andy stuck out his tongue at us, his tongue piercing showing. “That sounds really boring.”

“Hmph!” Summer frowned. “It isn’t boring!”

   “Whatever,” I said.

“bye then, you guys!” vee and summer waved as they walked away.

   “bye!”

   “Laterz!”

they left and i sighed, shaking my head. “women and their dresses.”

Andy laughed. “good one, pete, good one.”

we kept walking down the hallway and i couldn’t help but feel like we were being followed. i turned around, but didn’t see anything.

“Everything okay, pete?” Andy asked, glancing back, too.

“um, ya. i think. let’s get out of here,” I said. “i’ve got the munchies. where should we eat?”

“so do i,” andy answered. “i think maybe we should go to lev—“

Andy’s ringtone, maroon 5 song “this love”, blasted through the hallway from andy’s pocket. “Sorry, dude. I gotta get this,” Andy apoligized. He took out his phone and flipped it open.

“Yeah? What aout him? he what?! oh crap! No he didn’t! okay, i’ll be there in a sec!” he hung up and looked upset.

   “What’s wrong, andy?” I asked.

It-it’s frodo. he’s in the vet ‘cause he ate a marker!”

“aww, man! is he gonna be alright?” frodo was andy’s cat that was the most amazing cat ever.

“I dunno, but i’m gonna go over there and check it out.” he started walking way. “Sorry that i can’t go, Pete.”

I sighed. “it’s alright, man.” he left. “now i’m bored and alone,” i muttered.

Now what am i gonna do? i thought. all my friends had other things to do. i felt bummed.

i saw frankie talking to his egg partner, nicole, down the hallway.

Maybe i’ll ask them if they wanna hang out, i thought. i startted walking towards them when I saw something move from the corner of my eye. i looked in that direction and came to a dead stop. crap!

“Pete!” i heard christi tell me. she took me by the arm. i tried to pull away, but she only held on tighter.

   “um, hi.”

“i overheard what you said,” she said as i kept walking.

   “what did i say?”
“that you were bored and alone, silly!”

   “I was only spe—“

“well,” She cut me off. “since you’re so cute, i won’t let you be alone.  i’ll take you somewhere where you won’t be alone. you’ll be with me. and lauren,” she quickly added and smiled. “i don’t wanna spend the afternoon alone, you know. You’d be a great companion.”

   “Um, thanks.”

“Parent’s are s’posed to spend time together, too.”

I really just wanted to see christi leave, but i couldn’t think of any way to brush her off without sounding mean. i didn’t wanna hurt her and say ‘back off! leave me alone, bitch!’ and i really wanted to say it, but i didn’t besides, she was right. parents were s’possed to spend the time together. i sighed. it was gonna be a long day….

Rolling Stone magazine reviews TAI's "About A Girl"

The Academy Is… “About a Girl”

(3 stars)

This snappy emo strut finds these Chicago suburbanites sounding like the Decemberists minus the English-major affectations. “One song/About a girl/Can’t breathe/When I’m around her,” announces William Beckett over ringing guitars, while the hearts of a hundreds Hollister-rocking 15-year-olds skip a beat. It’s somewhat generic, but that “woooo!” around the one-minute mark will make you tingle.

VEE’S POV

During PE, the group was sitting on the grass by the fence. The hot sun was beating down on us.

“I got some squirt guns in my locker if you guys wanna play!” Bobert suggested.

“I love water guns! Bring ‘em out here!” I yelled, happy to finally have something to do.

“Okay, I’ll be right back!” He ran inside the locker room and came out with 5 water guns. “But we have to fill ‘em up.”

   “I’ll help!” Summer volunteered.

“Me, too,” Andy said. They both followed Bob to the water fountain.

So Pete and I were left alone. “I can’t wait until they bring the water guns back!” I jumped up and down excitedly. “I haven’t played with those since I was a baby! Well, a pre-teen, anyways.”

“Ya, those things are pretty exciting, huh?” Pete agreed.

“PETE!!” Someone called out. We both turned ’round to see none other than Christi Legassi coming our way. “Hey, Pete.” She shot him a wide grin. “You like my shirt? Bought it yesterday.” She shamelessly modeled it in front of us, obvs. Expecting Pete to drool over her or something. I suppressed to urge to laugh. It was a really ugly magenta shirt with gold glittery lettering that revealed too much skin and was too small, but I guessed that was the way it was s’pose to be.

“Uhh—” Pete started, but Christi cut him off.

“Anyway, remember you told me that you didn’t have a date to the dance? Since I don’t either, I was wondering, why don’t we just go together?” she asked hopefully.

   “I—” Pete started.

“But Pete already has a date,” I said quickly. “He and I are gonna go, aren’t we, Pete?” I winked at him. “I’d already told you in the morning, how could you forget?”

“Oh, um, so many things on my mind, you know? I guess I forgot. Sorry, babe,” he replied.

“So you go find another date, Legassi. Petey here’s all mine.” She shot me a dirty ‘eat-shit-and-die’ look and I just grinned brightly at her.

   “Ya, I am.” Pete laughed.

Here they are!” Bob said as he handed us each a water gun. I took it and turned to Christi. Her eyes opened wide with fear and she tried to turn and run away, but she wasn’t fast enough. I squirted her all over, and soaked her new shirt.

“AHHH!!” she screamed angrily. Summer and I laughed our heads off as she ran off.

“Vee, that was mean!” Summer said, but smiled despite herself. I laughed.

“Good one, Vee,” Boubon said and high-fived me.

“Who’s up for a good water war?” I asked. “Team Vee vs. Team Summer!”

   “Team Vee!” Pete said.

“Team Summer!” Andy and Bobert cheered and stood next to her.

Pete and I took our water guns.

“It’s on!” Summer grinned. Bob and Andy clicked their water guns on.

BOB’S POV

I was on Team Summer with Andy and Summer. We were in battle with Pete and Vee. First I squirted Pete in the face. He was laughing so all the water went into his mouth. Then he started making weird gurgling noises.

Suddenly something shot me from the back. It was Vee. She drenched all my gym clothes in water. I was down.

SUMMER’S POV

Now it was only me and Andy vs. Vee. Bobert had taken Pete down, but Vee’d caught him by surprise.

“Grr!” I shouted. Vee clawed at me, laughing.

“Ahh!” she yelled her battle cry. She turned her water gun and aimed at Andy.

Andy and I looked at each other and nodded in agreement. We both turned and shot at Vee.

VEE’S POV

“Ahh!” I cried. I was planning to take Andy down first and then Summer, but I’d let my guard down. Both of them grinned and wet me.

Summer began to laugh like a villain from the cartoons. My pride was washed away when that water hit me. I fell onto the ground and looked at Pete. He looked back at me. His white Green Day Kerplunk! shirt had grass and mud stains. He grinned at me. I looked back up to see Summer and Andy still laughing at us, his glasses dripping wet with water. Pete and I got to our feet.

“We totes whooped your asses!” Summer teased.

“Shut up! I hate you!” I buried my face in Pete’s shoulder and acted like I was crying.

“Aww, don’t take it so seriously! It was just a game!” Andy said. “Vee, c’mon!”

“Oh my goth! She’s melodramatic and she’s not even crying!” Summer argued.

“How do you know?” I challenged, looking up.

“I’ve known you long enough. See, there’s not even any tears!” Summer pointed at me.

“Damn!” I said, burying my face again.

   “And plus, you hate everyone!”

I raised my head from Pete’s shoulder. “It’s true. I do hate everyone….”

“You hate me?” Pete asked, pouting at me, his forehead wrinkling in worry.

“Sometimes….” I admitted. His bottom lip quivered. “Sorta. Don’t take it personally. I hate everyone at some point in time, but the hate I feel for you is relatively low. Right now.”

He grinned widely and hugged me.

“Hey Bob, get up,” Andy said, nudging Bobert who’d been lying on the floor since I’d squirted him. “Bob.” Bob didn’t move so Andy kicked him lightly. “Bob!” Everyone got down on their knees.

SUMMER’S POV

I slapped Bob’s face a couple of times, but he really didn’t react.

“Oh, no! Is he dead?” Vee asked.

I shrieked. “No!! He can’t be!!!”

Pete hit him again, but Bob still lay unconscious.

“Oh my goth! Bob!” I rested my head on his chest and started to cry. “You were such a great dad to Zimmy!”

I suddenly felt his eyes wrap themselves around his shoulders. He sat up and landed a slobbery kiss on me until I pulled back. “Eww! Bob! Why’d you do that?”
“I dunno. I saw it in a movie once where the superhero’s about to die. Thought it would be cool.” He grinned sheepishly.

“Ooh! Bob’s got the hots for Summer!” Vee laughed. I turned red.

“Shut up, Vee!” I got up and shove her playfully, but she still kept laughing.

Bobert got to his feet and Andy sighed.

“Gosh, Vee. Only ‘cause they kissed it doesn’t mean they’ve got the hots for each other!” Andy argued.

   “Ya!” I agreed.

“They’re both s’pose to be ‘married couple’ ‘cause they have a baby unless Summer’s a slut with a kid!” Vee laughed. I glared. “And if they’re a married couple they’re suppose to act like it!”

“Nuh-uh!” Pete argued. “I’m with Christi and you don’t see me making out with her!”

PETE’S POV

“NUH-UH!” I SAID. “I’M WITH CHRISTI AND YOU DON’T SEE ME MAKING OUT WITH HER!”

   “HMM…GOOD POINT,” ANDY SAID.

“WELL, MAYBE YOU SHOULD START TO, PETE!” SUMMER LAUGHED.

NO WAY IN HELL!” I PROTESTED.

EVERYONE BUT ME CRACKED UP. I DIDN’T THINK IT WAS FUNNY ONE BIT.

“OH….” BOB SAID AS HE DROOLED A LITTLE.

“WHAT?” SUMMER ASKED. “WHAT IS IT, HUBBBY?”

“YOUR SHIRTS…SO WET…SO TIGHT….” HE STARED BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE TWO GIRLS. ANDY DID, TOO AND PRETTY SOON I FOUND MYSELF DOING THE SAME. BOB WAS TOTES RIGHT.

“OH MY GOTH!” SUMMER YELLED AS SHE TURNED HER BACK ON US. “YOU GUYS ARE TOTES GROSS!”

“YA, LIKE WHAT THE HELL?!” VEE SHOT US A DISGUISTED LOOK AS SHE TURNED AWAY, TOO.

WE ALL LAUGHED NERVOUSLY. I SIGHED.

“WELL, YOU CAN HAVE MY JACKET IF YOU’D LIKE, SUMMER,” ANDY OFFERED AS HE PEELED OFF HIS BLACK ZIP-UP HOODIE. HE HANDED IT TO AN EAGER SUMMER.

   BOB AND I BOOED.

“C’MON, DON’T RUIN IT!” BOB SAID.

“AWW, YOU GUYS ARE NO FUN!” I ADDED.

“AT LEAST YOU’RE THE DECENT GUY HERE, ANDY!” SHE UT ON THE JACKET AND SMILED AT ANDY, KISSING HIS CHEEK. HE GRINNED.

“WELL YOU CAN HAVE MY SHIRT IF YOU WANT, VEE,” I SAID.

“SURE.” I TOOK IT OFF AND GAVE IT TO HER, SO I ONLY WORE MY WHITE SLEEPING SHIRT. IT AS WAY DRIER THAN HERS.

“THANKS!” SHE SMILED AND HUGGED ME TIGHTLY. I HUGGED HER BACK AND RAN MY FINGERS THROUGH HER WET HAIR. I GRINNED. WAS THIS A GREAT DAY OR WHAT?

PETE’S POV

“STUDENTS,” MR. ARANGO STARTED TO SPEAK IN THE ASSEMBLY THE NEXT MORNING. “I’M HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE’LL BE HAVING THE LAST DANCE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR NEXT WEEK. IT WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED FOR A FEW WEEKS BACK, BUT IT HAD BEEN DELAYED.

“I CALLED YOU ALL HERE, FRESHMEN, TO GIVE US THEMES FOR THE DANCE. SINCE YOU ARE FRESH FACES FOR THE SCHOOL, WE WANT YOUR FIRST DANCE TO BE MORE MEMORABLE.”

MR. ARANGO SMILED. “SO, WHAT IDEAS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR US?”

I TURNED TO LOOK AT VEE AND THE REST OF THE GROUP, BUT THEY APPEARED CLULESS.

“WHY DON’T WE BASE IT ON THE EGG PROJECT?” KATE DAVIDSON ASKED. KIDS BOOED.

“HOW ABOUT EACH COUPLE COMES IN ONE COLOR?” A BOY I DIDN’T KNOW SHOUTED OUT.

“LET’S BE BARBIES AND KENTS!” LOLA SUGGESTED. I SAW VEE AND SUMMER ROLL THEIR EYES. IT WAS A DUMB IDEA.

“SUPRHEROS!” ANDY YELLED. “LIKE A DUDE DRESSES UP LIKE FLASH, AND A GIRL CAN BE WONDERWOMAN!” THE GROUP CHEERED BUT OTHERS BOOED. ANDY FLIPPED THEM OFF.

“YEAH, LIKE, BATMAN AND SUPERGIRL!” I AGREED. WE WERE TOTAL COMIC BOOK FREAKS.

“PORNSTARS!” BOYD URIE INSISTED. “OR PLAYBOY BUNNIES. HOOTERS, DOMINATRIXES, I DON’T CARE!” GUYS CHEERED ALONG WITH SOME HORNY GIRLS WHLE THE RST BOOED.

“TIKKI PARTY!” SOME GIRL WITH RED BRAIDS SAID.

   “NO!” VEE ARGUED.

“OLD SCHOOL?” SUMMER SUGGESTED. VEE, ANDY, BOB AND I CHEERED. SO DID SOME OTHER PEOPLE. I’D LIKE TO DRESS LIKE AN OLD SCHOOL PEREP, WITH A COMEOVER. I LAUGHED AT THE VISUAL IMAGE.

CHRISTI WAS SITTING A ROW AHEAD OF ME AND SHE TURNED AROUDN TO SMILE A T ME. I ACTED AS IF I HAD NOT SEEN HER AND CHEERED, SEARCHING AIMLESSLY IN THE CROWD OF FACES, PRETENDING I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. ANYTHING TO AVOID HER GAZE.

SHE LOOKED ANNOYED, KEEPING HER EYES GLUED ON ME, BUT EVENTUALLY GAVE UP AND TURNED AROUND.

“SO THAT’S IT, STUDENTS! ‘OLD SCHOOL’ IS OUR THEME FOR THE LAST DANCE OF THE YEAR.” MR. ARANGO GRINNED.

“NO!” LOLA POUTED. “I WANTED TO BE A BARBIE!!” SHE STARTED TO CRY.

“LOOK AT THAT DUMBASS!” VEE SAID REALLY LOUDLY. I LAUGHED.

“VEE!!” SUMMER HIT HER SHOULDER. SHE JUST LAUGHED, TOO.

“SORRY, MS. MUNIZ, BUT IT HAS BEEN CHOSEN. THE MAJORITY WANT IT,” MR ARAYO SAID. “THANK YOU FOR COMING TO THE ASSEMBLY. YOU CAN NOW REPORT BACK TO HEALTH CLASS.” WE GOT OUR STUF AND LEFT.

SUMMER’S POV

“I’m taking you to the dance,” Andy said as we walked to class.

“Me, too!” Bobert chimed in. “We’re all going as friends.”

“Okay,” I agreed. “My best guy friends!” I hugged Andy and Bob. I grinned ‘cause it was going o be great. I knew I’d have to shop for a dress with Vee. I had to ask her.

RYAN’S POV

“Are You Going To The Dance, Kit? I’m Still Not Sure,” I Told Her During Class.

She Was Fixing Up Jamie’s Box.

“Um, I Don’t Think So,” She Said And Gave Me A Kiss On The Cheek. “You’re A Good Father.”

   I Smiled.

I Really Wanted To Go, But Vee Obvs. Wouldn’t Wanna Go With Me. I Sighed. And She’s Probably Going With Pete, I Thought. Life Was Horrible.

PETE’S POV

WHAT HELL IT WAS TO SIT WITH CHRISTI ALL HEALTH CLASS. SHE KEPT COMPLAINING TO ME ABOUT HOW VEE SHOULDN’T’VE HELPED US FIX THE BOX, THAT ONLY THE PARENTS WERE SUPPOSED TO GET TO DO THAT. SHE SAID THAT THE BOX LOOKED LIKE A BOY’S MORE THAN A GIRL’S. I JUST AND NODDED AND SMILED BORED OUT OF MY MIND. I WASN’T IN THE MOOD TO ARGUE WITH HER. MAYBE I SHOULD’VE CRACKED LAUREN

“NO ONE HAS ASKED ME TO GO TO THE DANCE YET, PETE,” SHE TOLD ME SUGGESTIVELY, HER EYES SHINING. “I’M STILL AVAILABLE, YOU KNOW. WHO’RE YOU GOING WITH, PETE?”
“I’M NOT SURE I’LL EVEN GO YET,” I ANSWERED TRUTHFULLY. “DANCES ARE KINDA BORING.”

“BUT IF WE GO TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT FUN, RIGHT?” she asked, placing her hand over mine. I pulled away.

“maybe,” i said distractedly, not listening.

vee’s pov

Andy, Boyd, and I sat together in health class with John Boyd. Andy constantly kept fixing up John Boyd’s box.

“You’re all a father could ask for,” he said.

“Why does he have to be here?!” Boyd asked angrily, glaring at Andy.

“He’s John Boyd’s stepdad, you idiot! How many times have I told you already?!” I replied. Boyd truly frustrated me. I wondered how he’d ever made it to high school with such a tiny brain….

“Ugh! I’m not having anymore of this, Vee!” he nearly yelled and got up and left.

Boyd’s POV

I walked over to Ms. G’s desk. I was determined to get Andy erased from our family picture.

“Ms. G, can we please get Andy off our team?” I asked. “I want to be my baby’s only dad. I don’t want a stepdad!”

She looked up. “I’m sorry Boyd, but Andy needs another pair to do his project with. His egg baby died due to the carelessness of his partner, and It wasn’t his fault. He can still get half credit and Ms. Conde doesn’t seem to mind him.”

“NO!!! I don’t want Andy to be here! It isn’t fair!!” I pleaded impatiently.

“Please, Boyd. Control yourself. Let the baby have two dads. I’m not asking for the impossible.” I stormed back to my desk, mad as hell.

   “I told you,” Vee said.

“Shut up,” I grumbled and put my head down on the desk. This was the worst project ever.

VEE’S POV

I walked with John Boyd’s box in my hands down the street to school. I saw Ryan walking ahead of me, his black hoodie’s hood up. I really wanted to talk to him again. I wanted to know why he was so pissed off. It felt so weird how just a few days ago we’d been friends and now we didn’t even talk….

“Ryan? What’s up?” I asked as friendly as I could. I walked right next to him.

He didn’t say anything at all; he didn’t even look at me.

“Ryan….what did I do? Why won’t you talk to me?” I asked worriedly.

He paused, licking his lips and sighing heavily. He finally turned to me, placing his hands on my shoulder.

RYAN’S POV

“Vee!” I Cried, Holding Her Small Frame By The Shoulders. “Why Didn’t You Tell Me? Why Didn’t You Tell Me You Were Seeing Someone Already? Why? Don’t You Know How Much It Hurt Me Doing That?” I Felt Tears Unwillingly Form In My Eyes, Threatening To Fall But I Blinked Them Back.

   “What?! With Who, Ryan?”

“I’m Not Dumb, Vee! I Saw You And Pete Kissing At Pizza Plate The Other Day. You’re With Him! Why Did You Have To Do This Behind My Back?!”

“Oh, That.” Vee Blushed. “It’s Not What It Looked Like.”

“Then What Is It Vee?” I Wanted To Know.

“It’s…Complicated. You See, I Was Just Pretending To Be With Pete So That That Christi Girl Would Stop Bothering Him. I Wasn’t Actually With Him Or Anything. Gees, Pete’s Just My Friend.”

I Stared At Her Disbelievingly. “I Don’t Believe You! You’re Lying! How Can I Make Sure Every Word Coming Out Of Your Mouth Isn’t A Lie?”

I Could See The Hurt In Her Eyes. “Why Would I Lie To You?”

“You Just Can’t Stick To One Boy, Can You? But I Told You I Loved You And I Thought You Did Too… Is That What You Always Say? Did You Say That To Pete, Too?”

Her Eyes Narrowed And She Shook Her Head In Disbelief. She Suddenly Brought Up Her Hand And Smacked Me Straight On The Cheek. It Stung. “What?! You Think I’d Do That, Ryan? You Think I’m Like That? I’m Not! I Was Just Helping A Friend. But Believe What You Want. It Doesn’t Matter To Me Anymore.” She Glared And Ran Off Into The Distance.

I Put My Hand Over My Slapped Cheek. “Vee! VEE!” I Called, Realizing My Mistake. But She Didn’t Turn Around. She Just Ran Faster. What Had I Just Done?

VEE’S POV

I avoided Ryan all day. I couldn’t bear to see him. It was clear. He thought I was a whore! I couldn’t believe he’d practically called me that. I wouldn’t ever do that, but it didn’t matter. Ryan didn’t matter. To hell with him.

I kept running until I got to school. This was definitely a horrible start to the day.

ANDY’S POV

Vee let me borrow John Boyd during passing period and not once did I leave John out of my sight. He was always resting in his box atop my desk.

At least I had someone else to care for, but John Boyd would never take the place of my first son. John Boyd inspired me to write another issue to my comic.

I included him in it. He helped The Patient free himself from the evil brownie monster, Brownie. Brownie had stolen the world’s most expensive and biggest brownie from a bakery in Paris. The Patient had tried to stop him, but Brownie had caught him and tied him up to the top of the Eiffel Tower and Brownie had planned to blow it up, but John Boyd had come and distracted him with brownies as he deactivated the bomb and saved The Patient and the statue.

   Ahh, good times.

BOB’S POV

I thought that Summer was a little weird taking the parenting thing so seriously. But whatever. We’d always sat together so it wasn’t really different.

Everyone was talking at our table, but all I was thinking about was…well, it wasn’t anything at all. I was just replying last night’s Twilight Zone in my head.

I wondered what the weather was like back in Mwrahland…

SUMMER’S POV

“Hey, what’s up with you and Ryan? Patched things up yet?” I asked Vee.

“I don’t wanna talk about him,” Vee mumbled.

   “Why? What’s up?”

“He—he saw Pete and I kissing and now he’s all pissed, but I don’t fucking care. He’s shit,” she replied. She really did look mad.

“So…you’re breaking all bonds with Ross?”

   “Yea.”

   “Hmm?”

“Do you love Pete? Like, love love Pete?”

“I-I don’t know” .Vee blushed. “Why are you asking?”
“It’s just because when you guys kiss, when you’re together it just seems as if there’s really something there.”

   VEE’S POV

Summer had asked me something I would’ve never thought of: If I loved Pete Wentz. And I really wasn’t sure. I’d never really thought of that. I’d never really thought of Pete that way; he’d always just been my friend, someone who was always there for me…. But now that I thought about it, my heart did speed up a little when I saw him. And the romantic things he said…. But it was all acting, I forced myself to remember. To get Christi off his back. And I didn’t think he felt like that about me, anyway. No, he wouldn’t.

BOYD’S POV

I went to see Vee at some point during school.

   “Where’s Boyd Jr.?” I asked.

“His name’s not Boyd anymore. It’s John Boyd. And He’s with his stepdad.”

   Stepdad?!” I asked confoosed.

“Yeah, Andy Hurley. He’s John Boyd’s stepdad.”

“Vee, you can’t have an affair!!!” I was supposed to be the only one in your life!” I yelled, angered by this stepdad character even coming up.

“Will you just shut the fuck up, Manwhore? We’re not really married. Ms. G said it was okay if Andy was our third party. His son’, John, was killed. He fell out of his Mom’s locker. It was tragic.” She looked at the floor as if not expecting an answer.

“NO!!! Boyd’s not gonna be named after a dead egg! He’s his own person!”

“Deal with it, Boyd.  I never liked the name Boyd, anyway.” She looked irritated and sped past me into the hallway.

“I’m filing for divorce! And I’m going to fight for the custody of Boydie!” I yelled.

She flicked me off and said “It’s John Boyd, dumbass!”

RYAN’S POV

I Tried To Talk For The Rest Of The Day, But She Just Ignored Me. Every Time She Saw Me In The Hall, She Changed Directions. Maybe I Had Made A Mistake. Maybe She Was Right And Was Really Telling The Truth. But I Sure As Hell Couldn’t Regret It Now. Even If I Did That Wouldn’t Change Things With Her. Maybe I Was Just A Mindless Jerk.

I Sat Alone In The Lunchroom Analyzing Every Conversation I’d Ever Had With Vee, Searching For Any Signs Of Infidelity Or Dramatic Change In Her. I Heard Someone Suddenly Sit Next To Me While I Munched Halfheartedly On My Corn. I Turned To See Kit Sitting By Me.

“What Up, Ross?” She Said, Holding Jamie’s Box.

“Nothing.” I Sighed. I Looked Into Kit’s Concerned Eyes. There Was Love In There, I Could See It, But I Didn’t Love Her Back.

“Let’s Walk To Class Together, Ya?” She Asked. I Nodded And Got Up And Took Her Hand. She Smiled At Me.

SUMMER’S POV

Bob held Zimmy. It was his turn to take her home. I didn’t know how I’d be able to sleep tonight without knowing what Zimmy was doing. But I had to learn to trust Bobert. It wasn’t good for me to always be taking care of Zimmy. My baby needed to learn to be independent.

I waved to Bob and headed up to my room and threw my mom’s arts and crafts bins onto my bed. I found some iron-on letters and a white shirt. I ironed on “Best Daddy In The World.” Bobert would be so happy when I gave it to him tommorow!

VEE”S POV

We were watching a movie in Mr. Jack’s class and I was sitting with Pete when he told me that Christi was approaching. I immediately hopped onto his lap. He wrapped his arms around my waist and started to kiss me. It was really weird, because it felt natural to do this with Pete now, not like I liked him or anything…. I was just growing used to it.

Christi saw us and I thought she’d decide to go away, but she didn’t she came towards us, fuming with rage.

“Petey! Yoo-hoo! Over here!” Pete didn’t turn, so she tried harder. “Petey! PETEY!!” She practically screamed. Pete finally gave up and looked at her with a sorta mad face.

“Don’t call him like that! Only his girlfriends can, huh Petey?” I glanced at him.

“Yea. She rules over me,” he growled and I rested my head on his shoulder. “What were you gonna say, anyway?”

“Umm, I thought that we should use this free time to decorate it. The box, I mean. My friends gave mw some stuff.”

“Can you help me, Vee? I’m awfully bad at this stuff.” He looked expectantly at me.

“That’s why I’m here, silly!” Christi said, placing her hand on Pete’s shoulder. “She can’t help. It’s between us. And she probably has other things to do, like with Boyd Urie.” She shot a dirty look my way.

“It’s okay. We like to break a few rules. Vee’s like a part of me, anyway. Won’t you help me, babe?”

“’Course, Peter Pan. Anything for you!” I cringed inwardly at how much I sounded like a stereo-typical girlfriend. He smiled at me and kissed me and boy, was Christi mad.

PETE’S POV

DURING THE MOVIE VEE AND I, AND, UNFORTUNATELY, CHRISTI FIXED UP LAUREN’S SHOE BOX.

“LET’S PUT KNIVES, BLOOD, AND VAMPIRES ON IT!” VEE TOLD ME GIDDILY. “LAUREN’S GOTTA BE JUST LIKE HER DADDY.” I LAUGHED.

“NO!! LAUREN ISN’T—“CHRISTI STOPPED HERSELF BEFORE SHE CUSSED VEE OUT IN FRONT OF ME. “SHE ISN’T A DEMONIC CHILD!”

“But Pete likes it that way, don’t you Petey?” Vee looked at me with a “say-yes” expression.

“yea. i want it to be black and red. c’mon, christi. stretch a little.” i gave her my best insisting look.

“fine,” she agreed reluctantly. “but has to at least have some pink.”

“no!” vee argued. “pete, you know I hate pink. You do too, Peter pan.”

“ya. I hate pink,” I said grinning. i knew it was really hard for christi to keep her composure and not slit vee’s throat. she was turning bright red with frustration.

vee’s pov

I kept disagreeing with whatever came out of Christi’s mouth and backing it up by saying that Pete thought the same as me. All this just to piss her off or make her piss off for once and for all.

I wanted to laugh at her so hard. Christi was reaching her breaking point. I could tell by how red her face was getting. But luckily for me, we’d already finished the box.

Lauren’s box ended up being decorated with only black, red, and white. Her makeshift sheets were black and her red walls had white skulls and fangs hand drawn on them by Pete and I.

    “Doesn’t it look great, Pete?”

“Yea, babe; it looks perfect. Just like you,” Pete agreed.

I laughed at how cheesy he could be. “Aw, Pete you’re too good.” I grinned at him.

“Shouldn’t you, like go, Veronica?! With like Boyd or something? Leave Pete and I some alone time with Lauren?!” Christi asked, desperate to get rid of me.

“No! I couldn’t live without Vee, ever!” Pete said, hugging me close. I laughed.

“Nah, maybe she’s right, Petey…” I saw her face light up.

“No, fuck that! Stay here, Vee. Please?” Her face dropped.

“Fine, Pete. I’ll stay. Boydie’s stepdad is taking care of him, anyway.” Pete grinned at kissed me eagerly. Wow, I thought. Pete’s really good at this acting thing….

PETE’S POV

LAUREN, Christi, Vee, and I decided to watch the movie together, with vee snuggled up next to me. it felt like a dream. it was so surreal. and still christi stayed.

i didn’t know how far we’d have to go until christi left me alone and i didn’t have that excuse anymore. but i knew that for now, i could definitely live kissing vee.

ryan’s pov

Kit And I Were Really Good Partners. We Shared Our Egg Kid Equally, But It Just Wasn’t The Same. I Longed To Have Vee As My Partner. I Don’t Know Why, But I’d Desperately Hoped That I’d End Up Being Her Partner When Ms. G Had Been Assigning Partners, Even If I Was Mad At Her.

But At The Same Time I Wanted To Avoid Vee AT All Costs. I Couldn’t Bear To See Her. Especially Now That She Was All Lovey-Dovey With Peter Wentz. And When I Did, I’d Have Flashbacks To When I’d First Seen Her Kissing Him At Pizza Plate. I Sighed. The Feelings I Had Towards Her Were So Confusing And I Felt So Helpless.

Andy’s POV

Early in the morning of the school day, I went over to Lola’s locker. She was looking through it. I was gonna pick up John.

   “Lola, where’s John?” I questioned.

“Huh?” she turned around to face me.

   “Where’s John?” I repeated.

“Somewhere in here, Drew.” She shoved some books to the side and seemingly thousands of papers spilled out onto the hall floor.

“You didn’t take John home?” I asked angrily. “You just left him here?!”

“Yeah. So? Who cares, it’s just a freakin’ egg, Drew.”

“But—but John was probably cold and lonely in there, Lola! You’re supposed to take care of him!”

“Ugh! Will you just shut up for a minute, Drew?”

“My name’s Andy, not Drew!” More papers fell out of her locker and so did a familiar shoe box. It clattered to the floor with a cracking noise. I kneeled down to pick the box up. I looked inside and John lay there, shattered into a million little pieces.

“NOOO!!” I yelled. “JOHN!” I hugged him close to me and felt tears form in my eyes. My son had been killed.

“How could you do this, Lola?” I demanded. “How could you? John was innocent! He didn’t deserve this!”

“Relax, Drew! Gosh, it’s just an egg!” she said.

“No, he wasn’t just an egg. He was our son! My whole world! You’re a horrible mother! If it wasn’t for you he’d still be alive!” I wiped away my tears and walked down the hallway. I couldn’t stand looking at that—that murderer. John was gone. My first son was gone.

VEE’S POV

I was walking through the school hallways, searching for any sign of Boyd. I’d been walking for a while and I still couldn’t find him. I started to worry.

Where was Boydie? What had Boyd done to him?

I needed to protect that egg for my grade’s sake. I finally found him, flirting in a corner with a bunch of older girls. I walked up to him, but he didn’t even notice me.

“Boyd!” I said. “Boyd!” He looked up and frowned.

   “I’m busy right now, Veronica.”

“I know, but do you think I care?” He cocked an eyebrow at me.

“I’ll be right back ladies.” He smiled at the idiot girls that giggled and blew kisses at him.

He sighed and pulled me aside. “What do you want?” he asked, annoyed.

“I want to know where Boydie is.”

“Here.” He pulled the box out of his backpack and handed it to me. It was decorated in different shades of blue and pictures of other eggs were pasted on the walls.

“What the hell?” I laughed. “Are these ‘girl’ eggs?”

“Yep.” Boyd grinned. “He’s gotta have his Playboy just like his daddy.”

I laughed. “No, he’s not.” I tore off the pics.

   “Hey!” Boyd protested.

“I’m sorry, but Boydie’s not a man whore! He’s a decent rocker egg baby!”

   “Hmph!”

“Bye, Boyd,” I said and began to walk to class. I felt someone tap my shoulder. I looked to my right and saw Pete walking next to me.

   “‘Ello, Peter Pan,” I greeted.

   “Hi, Vee,” he smiled.

“How’s your time going with Christi so far?” I asked.

“Horrible. She won’t even give me a minute’s peace!”

I laughed. “That’s what you get for being loved by a stalker, Pete.”

He shook his head. “And another thing is that she’s started to call me Petey and I only like it when you or the gang calls me that. Not cool!”

“I feel for you,” I laughed.

PETE’S POV

“I FEEL FOR YOU,” VEE TOLD ME.

I WAS EXPLAINING TO HER WHAT HAD HAPPENED SO FAR WITH CHRISTI WHEN I FELT SOMEONE PLACE THEIR HANDS OVER MY EYES. I IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHO IT WAS; CHRISTI. I GULPEd. there was only one person in the world that would dare do anything like that.

“GUESS WHO IT IS!” I HEARD HER SAY.

“What’s up, Summer?” I said, just to make her mad.

She took her hands off me and I could see her again. Yes! “No, silly!” she said as she walked beside me and took my arm. “It’s me, Christi!” She smiled really big at me, making me look at the floor.

   “Where’s Lauren?” asked Christi.

   “Who?” Vee looked confused.

   “The egg baby,” I explained.

Our egg baby,” Christi added. Vee raised her eyebrows.

I searched through my backpack and took out the box. I handed it to Christi. She opened it and Lauren was inside. Her face showed disappointment.

“You—you didn’t decorate it?” she asked.

   “Nope.”

   “But—but everyone else did!”

“Well,” Vee said, hugging close to my chest. “My Pete isn’t anyone else.”

Christi frowned and looked down at the box. “Don’t worry, Pete,” she smiled. “We can decorate it later. Together.”

   “Um, I CAN’T, Christi,” I answered.

   “Why?” she pouted.

“Uh…,” I racked my mind for an excuse, but couldn’t find one. Luckily, Vee saved me.

“My boyfriend and I already have plans, Legassi. We actually have lives.” Vee hugged me tighter. I sighed deeply.

I’d never ever in a million years think that girls would be going at each other’s throats for me. Vee took a hold of my hand.

“Well, see you later, Pete.” Christi was about to kiss me good-bye on the cheek, when Vee snatched me from under her nose and gave me a hard kiss on the lips.

“Bye,” I laughed as Christi walked away, her face with a full on flush. “Phew! Nice save, Vee! Thanks!”

“No problem, Peter pan!” She smiled and almost immediately dropped the girlfriend act, letting go of my hand and distancing herself a bit from me. “Let’s go to class?”

She pulled me into Mr. jack’s class and I grinned. I wouldn’t have to spend a lot of time with Christi today!

SUMMER’S POV

Bob, Zimmy, and I walked to class and sat with the group. “Hi everybody. Have you met Zimmy?”

   “Zimmy?” Vee laughed.

“Ya, Zimmy. That was Bob’s great great great aunt’s name.”

“Meet Boydie Urie, Zimmy.” Vee said, taking out her egg.

“What about your egg, Pete?” I asked.

“Christi has it. Her name’s Lauren. She’s real cute,” he smiled.

   “Andy? What about your egg?”

Andy looked up at me from his box. His eyes were lined with red and his red hair was messed up. He held up the box to show shattered pieces of an egg. I gasped.

“Oh! You poor thing!” I went over to hug Andy.

“His name was John and Lola killed him in his sleep!” he sobbed.

“Its okay, it’s okay,” I tried to comfort him, but I didn’t even believe it myself. I couldn’t imagine the pain Andy was going through. Losing a child could have been the hardest thing.

Pete’s POV

When Andy told us that his egg had cracked, he started to get emotional. I didn’t think an egg could make Andy cry. Then again, he was a hard core vegan.

I wished my egg had cracked, so that I didn’t have to be with Christi anymore. Maybe I should crack it myself…But no. Too suspicious. I needed to get an ‘A’ for Health; I was failing the class. I couldn’t really pay attention. I got all giggly when they spoke about privates. Immature, I know.

“It’s alright, Andy.” Vee hugged him. “You can spend time with Boyd and I. His name’s gonna be changed to John Boyd now. Sounds like a celebrity, don’t ya think? Boyd’s not gonna be around anyway. I mean, you know how he is. He makes babies and then just leaves them!”

Andy smiled. “I’d love to be John Boyd’s step dad.” He took the egg and kissed its head. He took out a little t-shirt from his backpack. He scribbled something on the front of it with metallic silver Sharpie.

“What’s that?” Vee asked as Andy put it on the egg.

“It’s a shirt. It was supposed to be for my first son, but I think John Boyd will like it.” I looked at the little black shirt. It read ‘I Listen to Punk Rock with My Step-Daddy’.

“Oh my God! That’s so cute!” Summer chimed.

“We’ll watch a movie class!” Mr. jack interrupted. “I want you to pay close attention to what choices the humans in the following make. I want you to understand how the human mind works.” He clicked on the DVD player and some boring black and white movie started to play. Some kids started to boo, but Mr. Jack didn’t pay attention and just waved them off.

Oh shit! I thought as I saw Christi heading towards our table. I poked Vee, and she turned to look at me. “Christi!” I whispered.

freshman freak or comeback of the year

[[ch35]]

PETE’S POV

When school was out, I grabbed Lauren and walked quickly out the door, hoping to get home and not run into Christi. I saw Frankie up ahead. He was accompanied by Nikki Duncan.

   “Hey, Frankie!” I greeted him.

“Hi, Pete,” Frankie said. “Are ya doin’ the egg project, too?”

“Ya,” I answered. “Who’s your partner?”

“Nikki here,” Frankie said and smiled at the redhead chick.

   “Hi, Pete,” she said.

   “Hi.”

“And this is our kid, Tony.” Frankie held up a black shoe box adorned with red sheets and a dark green label that read “Tony Rox!!!”

   “Cool.”

   “Who’s your partner?” he asked.

I sighed. “Take a wild guess.”

   “Um…Summer?” Frankie asked.

   “Nah.”

   “Vee?”

   “I wish. It’s Christi Legassi.”

   “Ooh! Poor you!” Frankie laughed.

“This is Lauren, by the way,” I said, holding up the plain egg and box.

   “Oh.”

   “Well, laterz!”

“Okay, bye.” Both Nikki and Frankie waved their good-byes and I kept walking.

Why didn’t I get paired up with Vee? I thought.  We would’ve had such a cute egg kid….

“PETE!” I heard someone shout. It sounded like Christi. I walked faster, afraid to turn around.

“Pete!” she kept calling. “Pete, wait!” I heard footsteps running, coming from behind me and I finally gave up. I couldn’t run without risking Lauren’s innocent life. Christi walked beside me and smiled.

“Why are you in such a hurry, Petey?” she asked.

“Um…I just gotta go to soccer practice.

“Oh, for a minute there I thought you were running away.” She laughed. I shivered in my socks. “You weren’t planning to go with Lauren, were you?” she asked worriedly.

“Uh…kinda. You were just so busy talking’ to Lola, I didn’t wanna bother ya.”

“Ooh!” she said. “I have an idea!”
“What is it?” I asked disinterestedly. To get lost and leave me alone?

“Wouldn’t you like it if Lauren and I watched her daddy play soccer?” she asked hopefully, and I had a feeling she wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“Um, whatever.” I handed Christi the box and ran into the boys’ bathroom to change into my soccer uniform.

When I ran out to the field, I spotted Christi sitting in the front bleachers with Lauren in her lap. She smiled at me and I forced myself to smile back.

The whole practice time I felt really nervous, knowing that Christi was watching my every move. I even messed up a few times. She kept cheering me on, hooting and whistling and clapping and screaming things “Go, Pete! Go!” and “You can do it and “Whoo, Pete!”. It was really embarrassing. I felt myself flushing red the whole time. The guys even teased me a bit for it.

“Go, Pete, go!” Brody Hayes mocked.

“Shut up,” I mumbled. God, I felt like I just wanted to die.

I was surprised that she’d stayed there the whole time.

“Good job, team!” Mr. O’Keif clapped. “That’s enough. Let’s call it a day.”

We all headed into the bathrooms and I changed into dark black shorts and grabbed my duffle bag. I walked outside and saw Christi was waiting for me.

“You were great, Pete,” she said.

   “Thanks,” I said.

I kept walking and I thought Christi would finally head home, but she didn’t. Instead she followed me.

“Hey, can you walk me home, Petey?” she asked. “It’s getting pretty dark, you know. And it’s dangerous for a girl like me to walk alone.”

   “Uh, sure?” I answered.

“You’re a really strong, Pete?” She looked at me with a dreamy expression and sighed deeply.

“I know,” I grinned. “Vee thinks so, too.”

   She frowned and looked away.

We walked in silence for a while until her house came in sight.

“Who’s gonna take Lauren?” she asked.

   “Um, I guess I will,” I said.

She smiled at me and handed Lauren over.

“Well, um, goodbye,” I told her as we reached her porch.

She leaned in and tried to kiss me on the lips, but I pulled away, letting her only kiss my cheeks.

“Okay,” she said, sounding disappointed. “Goodbye, Petey.”  Christi gave me a tight hug. “See you at school and take good care of our Lauren.”

“Okay,” I said awkwardly and walked away.

Our Lauren, she’d said, putting a strong emphasis on the word. I hoped she hadn’t taken this parent thing seriously. I sighed. Why did I have to be with Christi, of all people?”

Summer’s pov

“Here we are,” announced Mr. Bryar and we stopped in front of my house. We got out of the car and I held Zimmy close, careful not to drop or hurt her. I held Bobert’s hand and smiled up at him.

“Carry my backpack Bob, please?” I asked him.

   “Yokays.”

“Aren’t you excited Bob?” I wanted to know.

   “Ya.”

I opened the door and Mom and Dad were sitting in the living room.

“Mom, Dad—I want you to meet Bob Bryar. Bob and I---we had our first egg baby!” I held Zimmy out. “Here she is. Her name’s Zimmy.”

My mom smiled and hugged Bob. My dad shook his hand.

“You’re a lucky guy. Treat my baby Summer with respect and Zimmy, too. This means a lot to her.”

“’Course, man. Little Summer and I are taking good care of Zimmy. I’m from Mwrahland. You can bet I’ll keep my promise.” He made this weird noise, like between a rooster and an elephant.

My dad had a puzzled look on his face.

“It’s a Mwrahlandian greeting, Daddy,” I explained and hugged Bobert.

“Well, go and have fun!” my mom said.

“Ya, mom,” I squealed. Bob, Zimmy, and I headed out the door. I took out my camera.

“Let’s take a family picture with Zimmy, Bobby!”

I held Zimmy between us and snapped a picture. “Oh, Bobert! I’m so happy!” I hugged him again.

“Well, I gotta go. Bye, Zimmy. Bye, Summer.” He kissed the top of her head and kissed me on the cheek, then headed away.

“Say bye to daddy, Zimmy.” I waved and went back into the house.

freshman freak or comeback of the year

[[ch34]]

VEE’S POV

“And Veronica Conde?” Ms. Galvan said. “You are to be partners with…Mr. Boyd Urie. What?! I thought. Oh, boy. Boyd Urie. Why him? I didn’t want to be partners with that stuck up snob.

“Peter Wentz and Christi Legassi,” Ms. Galvan continued. “Andrew Hurley with Lola Muñiz; George Ryan Ross, you’re paired with Katherine Foppe.”

Pete and Christi? Pete and Christi?! What the fuck! They must’ve made a mistake! It wasn’t possible!

“Now sit with your partners and I’ll pass out the eggs.” I groaned and plopped down next to Boyd. He just grinned at me real wide.

We got our eggs in shoe boxes. “You can name the kids however you want. Become as attached to them as you can, like real babies!” Ms. Galvan squealed.

   Someone raised their hand.

   “Yes?” Ms. Galvan queried.

“Why are we doing this project?”

“It’s supposed to teach you how to be a parent and learn to communicate you feelings with your partner. It’s also going to show you the responsibilities of the real world.”

“Is it a boy or a girl?” I asked Boyd.

“A boy. He should be Boyd Jr.” He grinned.

“Whatever.” I took the box and grabbed the white egg.  Because of you, Boydie, I have to live through hell.

SUMMER’S POV

“O my god Bob! Our first child!” I squealed. I hugged Bobert. Taking care of a baby excited me I just had a problem with toddlers.

“Ya, little Zimmy’s our first piggy.”

   “Zimmy?”
“‘Course. Her name’s Zimmy. That was my great-great-great aunt’s name. She was from Russia.”

“Okay. Zimmy nit is. I just know you’re going to be the best daddy in the world!”

PETE’S POV

OH, SHIT! THIS COULDN’T BE HAPPENING! NO, NO! IT JUST COULDN’T!

“Hey, Pete. How are you?” Christi Legassi asked as she sat down next to me.

   “Um, good.”

   “Y’know, we’re parents now.”

“Ya, I know.” Ms Galvan came over and handed me the egg in a shoe box with a huge smile on her face; a devilish smile I was sure.  I bet she was enjoying every minute of my torture. I glared. What ever had I done to deserve something like this?

   “Let’s name her, Pete.”

   “Okay. Vee!”

“no! how about something that’s pretty like lauren?” she asked, looking frustrated.

“ya. sure.” she grinned and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

“I’ll be right back.” she ran off to talk her friend lola. i headed to ms. galvan’s desk. i tried to persuade her to let me do the egg project alone or something, but she just gave me a firm no. i absolutely had to be with christi.

i sighed, defeated, and returned to my desk. i glanced at vee. she was paired up with boyd and seemed as miserable as me.

ryan’s pov

We Had Been Assigned To A Project In Health Class And My Partner Was Katherine Foppe. Katherine Was Canadian And Chuck’s Cousin.

“Hi, Katherine. I’m Ryan, Ryan Ross.” I shook her hand.

“I Know. Don’t Call Me Katherine, Call Me Kit.” She Pushed Her Dark Black Hair Back.

“Okay, Kit. What Should Our Egg Be?”
“I Think It Should Be A Girl. Her Name Should Be Jamie.”

“Works For Me.” I Smiled Shyly. Kit Seemed Like I Nice Girl. I Could Live Through This. “Jamie Foppe Ross It Is.”

ANDY’S POV

I was sitting alone at my table. Lola had left to chat with Christi. I looked at John, my egg son. He was in good shape.

I took out a small cloth I used to clean my glasses and put it over his bottom half to serve as a blanket so John wouldn’t be cold. I folded up a piece of white paper into a hat and placed it on his head.

I showed John pictures of my comic, The Adventures of the Patient: Vampire Cat as I read it aloud to him. I think that John was the best son I could’ve ever asked for.

VEE’S POV

After school, Boyd asked me to walk home with him.

“I don’t trust you with Boydie. That’s the only reason I’m going,” I stated so he wouldn’t be getting any ideas. I was afraid Boyd would be reckless and throw Boydie out the window or play catch with him and he’d get cracked. Horrible thoughts!

I was still upset that I had gotten Boyd freaking Urie to be my partner. It was depressing.

BOYD’S POV

I asked Vee to go home with me. A lot of girls were walking by us as we left the school building. karrie  videka was walking by. I flashed her my winning mile and she blushed. I watched her as she walked away. Her ass was nice…. Oh, women. I loved them! And apparently, they loved me back!

“Boyd!” Vee said. “BOYD! Pay attention!”

“Ya, Ya. I am.” We got to my house and went up to my room.

“Where will Boydie sleep?” She asked.

   “There, on that book shelf.”
“Alright.” SHE set him down. Then she sat on my bed. I sat down next to her.

She was so close and in my room and I‘d always thought she was kinda cute. Maybe we could make some real babies of our own right now…. I smirked inwardly.

“Vee, do you believe in cupid?” I asked in a semi-breathy voice, giving her my best smile. I sat really close to her like, a few inches from her face. I always did this ‘cause I knew that if I sat really close made girls wanna kiss me. Maybe she’d be as easy as her friend, summer. Maybe they’d have a catfight over me. in mud…meow!

“No, a toddler with a weapon isn’t the most comforting thought. Or romantic.” I forced myself not to frown. All the girls I knew believed in cupid.

“DO you believe in love, then?” I asked.

“Not really. Love can’t save you. Everyone will die alone eventually. Plus, love’s related to cupid. That crazy baby can cause a massacre. Love is so overrated Boyd!” Goddamn it! I thought. How stupid can this girl be?!
For the first time in my life I think a girl wasn’t into me.

“Well, I’m gonna go. Bye, Boydie!” She said to the egg and then ran out the door. Ugh! Veronica Conde turned me OFF!

Summer’s POV

Bob and I went to Babies’R’Us after school. We bought Zimmy a little blanket and some white diaper clothes and lots of safety pins. I wanted Zimmy to start out as an environmentalist, so she could maybe grow up to be as great as Andy Hurley.

We also bought some ribbons to decorate her box and little head.

After we finished, I gave Bob a hug again. “Oh Bob! Look at Zimmy! She’s so beautiful, ain’t she?”

   “Yeah, little Zimmy!”

I wanted to keep Zimmy for tonight. Baby Zimmy. I patted her small, fragile head, and giggled.

How cute could a baby be?

   “Hey, Bob?”

  “Eh?”

“How come we have  a baby and you  still haven’t met my ‘rents?”

“Huh?” His gaze was directed at a toy robot for babies. I rolled my eyes.

“Y’know, you really should meet my ‘rents!” I told him. “They’d like you and baby Zimmy, the cutie!”

“Cool.” He kept looking at the toy.

“So…Why don’t we go over to my place and you can meet ‘em?”

“Sure.” I squealed with happiness and tugged at his sleeve.

   “Let’s go, then, Bobby!”

   “Wait!”

   “What is it?”

“Can we buy baby Zimmy a toy robot?”

   “Why would she need one?”

“So it can protect her from the monsters, of course!”

   “What monsters?” He laughed.

“Have you ever seen that movie, Monster’s Inc.?” I nodded. “Well, there’s monsters hiding in the closet and the robot man will be able to fight them and stop the monsters from kidnapping Zimmy! They want her to create a new race of eggs called Super Eggs. They’ll try to take over Pluto! And I like Pluto! I think it’s my dad’s real home world! He’s Plutonian, Summer!”

   He grinned at me.

“Plutonians are nice, good-driver dudes, huh?”

   “I guess so.”

   “So…Can we?”

   “Can we what?”

“Buy Zimmy a Robot Man 3100 to protect her from the egg-napping monsters! A-duh!”

   “Sure, Bob.”

We paid for our stuff and bob’s dad drove us to my house. I squealed again. My parents would be so happy to meet Bob and Zimmy! I seriously couldn’t wait!
